Judge rules Mahmoud Khalil can be deported

A Louisiana immigration judge ruled Friday that activist Mahmoud Khalil can be deported.

Khalil, who as a Columbia University graduate student led pro-Palestinian protests there last year, was detained last month after Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he had determined that Khalil's activism was antisemitic and that allowing him to remain in the country would undermine a U.S. foreign policy goal of combatting antisemitism around the world.

During a hearing at the remote Louisiana detention center where Khalil is being held, Judge Jamee Comans said she had no authority to question Rubio's determination.

After the ruling, Khalil told the judge, "I would like to quote what you said last time that there's nothing that's more important to this court than due process rights and fundamental fairness. Clearly what we witnessed today, neither of these principles were present today or in this whole process.

When you are in a country not your own they can withdraw your permission to be there for any or even no reason.

Your being there is strictly up to them.

You have no right to be there.

This has been the case ever since we have had nation states.

Why would the rules suddenly change now?

And why do people seem to find this surprising?

Guests to our country don’t get due process.

thats like saying a home invader needs to be evicted...

wait.. some states make you evict the squaters...

I can see why some would be confused.

β€œ Guests to our country don’t get due process.”

They do. This has been ruled on by the Supreme Court numerous times.

This is due process. He was moved to a facility appropriate to his issue. A closer facility would house him with violent criminals. My sympathy is in negative numbers.

In 2022, he immigrated to the U.S. on a student visa to attend SIPA.

Khalil then received a green card in 2024?

How?

He only married in 2023

and if he came here on student visa that is entirely revocable....

I’m willing to compromise. We could drop him off halfway there.

He signed and raised his right hand and swore that he would not do what he later did while in America and signed and raised his right hand and swore that he understood and agreed that he WOULD be deported if he did do what he later did while in America...

He definitely did that in order to IMMIGRATE to America...

Apparently he has an Alien Registration Card (green card)

Probably due to his marriage to an American citizen...

She would be his sponsor so she needs to be in trouble legally also because she would have promised that he was eligible to come and stay would behave while he lived here...

So true.
I have had the luxury of working and living abroad for many, many years.

I had to follow their rules and regulations; else I would be deported.

Once a year, I was required to check in with the immigration department for my work visa renewal. If I missed a check in, they would send immigration officials out and deport me. I followed their rules. I was a guest in their country. As long as I kept my nose clean, I could enjoy their country.

Which I did. I loved my time abroad.

Great. So we can now deport Hamas supporters. If they go through several weeks of processing.

Probably the NGO run by a wife or daughter of the judge.

HE graduated LAST DECEMBER so he is no longer a “student”, so WHY was he still living in a Columbia University owned STUDENT apartment, with his wife. And SHE isn’t a student.
