The Keystone Pipeline in North Dakota was shut down Tuesday morning after reports of a "bang" and spilled oil, according to officials.
In the hours before 7:45 a.m. local time, an employee at a pump station "heard what was described as a mechanical bang," Bill Suess, spill investigation program manager with North Dakota's Department of Environmental Quality, told CBS.
The cause of the ruptured pipe and the volume of spilled oil was not immediately clear.
He added that the unidentified employee then shut down the pipeline and notified emergency personnel and it was then isolated with containment resource deployed to the area.
A shutdown was initiated after a control center leak detection system displayed a pressure drop in its system, according to liquid pipeline company South Bow, which has managed the pipeline since last year.
South Bow officials said the burst occurred near Fort Ransom at Milepost 171 in the southeast corner of the state.
Crude oil was spewed over an agricultural field some 300 yards south of the pump station. According to reports, no structures or human life was impacted by the spill.

Sabotage? We don’t need this crap. This is what the communists will yell, the environment is being destroyed!
Underground pipeline.
Need an excavator to get to it.
Even valves are, for the most part, underground.
Not sabotage but can’t rule it out completely in today’s political environment.
Keystone I has been around for quite some time.
Antifa/CIA?
“Sabotage?”
How often do operating pipelines go “Bang” on their own?
The enviro terrorists are back
Thank you for that clarification. I was about to make an ask to freepers for more understanding because I thought Biden shutdown Keystone. I’ll admit I hadn’t stayed informed on the topic.
Sounds it...
The valves are all at the surface....and they do a good job of mapping them.
We also doo an excellent job at securing them.
More than just a chain and Master lock.
SCADA and permissions.
In the article, it explains that the line signaled a drop in pressure and the valves were shut-in; usually MLV-to-MLV are closed.
The MLV is above ground but actuated via SCADA
This indicates the release was below ground.
Video at link.
I haven't a clue as to what MLV-to-MLV even means. What is that referring to?
Could be a bad weld or a worn out elbow, a lot of sand or grit in the liquid will wear down a pipe like it was being sand-blasted.
Sabotage
(Keystone Pipeline in N.D. shut down after reports of ‘bang,’ spilled oil in field)
DEMOCRAT “Transgender” Terrorism?
Or just mechanical / other failure?
MLV to MLV means shutting down the pipeline between MAINLINE VALVES, thus isolating the section with the leak. SCADA is Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition, and can monitor pressures and flows along the pipeline. If conditions indicate a break or leak, the pipeline operator can remotely operate the motorized mainline valves to isolate the damage.
Nordstrom III?
This is what they will start doing re sabotage. Which facilitates a national security designation need to make the investment on security that shoots first and asks questions later. Designate all (or as many as possible) national infrastructure and security critical sites as falling into this category. Let detractors argue against that designation in court, and let the administration explain why it meets that criteria, but in the meantime, hold the detractors in detention until their court date matter is resolved. And let the perps rot in Guantanamo while that plays through. That will end the ‘Resistance’ in short order.
“This is what the communists will yell, the environment is being destroyed!”
Many years ago I worked oil field construction and we got a call from Chevron to dig up and repair a ruptured oil line, which was a small 3” line. After the job was done a sizeable area of crop land was saturated, and I asked the boss why we aren’t cleaning it up. He said it will just disappear.
He was right, a couple years later we returned to the same site for other work and a crop was growing where the spill was.
There are supposedly natural crude oil streams leaking beneath the oceans and it literally disappears. Some how or another Mother Nature cleans this stuff.
Amen
