WHCA rejects Trump administration’s plan to take over briefing room seating chart

The White House Correspondents’ Association on Monday pushed back against the White House’s plans to exert control over the briefing room seating assignments for journalists.

In an email to members, the association — which is made up of an independent group of journalists covering the Trump administration — said it was aware of the reported efforts from the White House to take over the briefing room’s organization chart. The seating has long been set by WHCA.

“If the White House pushes forward, it will become even more clear that the administration is seeking to cynically seize control of the system through which the independent press organizes itself, so that it is easier to exact punishment on outlets over their coverage,” the board wrote.

A report from Axios over the weekend, which POLITICO independently confirmed, stated that the White House press operation is planning to impose its own seating chart and comes amid a tense standoff between the White House and WHCA. POLITICO also is assigned to one of the seats at the press briefing. Last month, WHCA announced it would cede control of the White House press pool, the rotating cast of reporters assigned to cover the president after the White House took several actions to control media access.

And on Saturday, the WHCA canceled comedian Amber Ruffin’s planned performance at the annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner in April after it received criticism from the Trump administration. This comes as the White House in recent weeks also kicked HuffPost from the press pool while Bloomberg and Reuters are now sharing a wire spot.

Who normally controls seating, the host or the attendees? Don't see where the WHCA has a leg to stand on.

They should just rent their own conference room and decide seating there…

They don’t have to go if they don’t want. Nobody pays any attention to them anyway

Isn’t that what JoeBama did?
Built his own sound stage where he performed his role as pResident?

Tell the WHCA they can assemble there in order they please.
And then invite Leavitt to come over and visit.

I missed the part in the Costitution that says the White House has to provide a "briefing room" to the "Free Press".

Attendance can be whatever the White House deems proper, including seating arrangements. If you don't like it, don't show up.

What a concept.

What are the odds the WHCA will go to a federal court and try to block it? I’d say very high.

The headline indicates that they reject it, but I don’t see how they have a choice, unless a judge steps in.

Trump should ignore the ruling from that federal court.

Enough is enough.
