If the government wants people to not eat food that makes them fat and unhealthy, why is it paying for it through SNAP, or food stamps, for those with low incomes?
It seems like common sense that the government shouldn't subsidize or outright pay for the purchase of sugary soda and candy for those who are enrolled in a nutrition program from what's titled the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program.
But they are -- subsidize something and get more of it, and sure enough, we are paying for obesity. How many people have thought about this?
Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. has, and he's is working with Agriculture Secretary Gail Brooks to put a stop to it.
According to Newsweek:
Since being appointed to the Trump administration as head of Health and Human Services (HHS) earlier this month, Kennedy has made it clear he is in favor of stripping unhealthy foods from SNAP.
"The one place that I would say that we need to really change policy is the SNAP program and food stamps and in school lunches," Kennedy told Fox News. "There, the federal government in many cases is paying for it. And we shouldn't be subsidizing people to eat poison."
It's just common sense. When people get fat from gorging on unhealthy sugars and carbs on the government dime, their next stop is the free health care system where their health issues that come of it cost the government billions.
But even the government can't fix all of it. Being fat and unhealthy, with diabetes, high blood pressure, heart issues, and other ailments derived from consumption of sugar, soda, and other junk leaves the quality of life of those who partake diminished and facing an early death.

I’ve never seen a fat person in picture of concentration camp survivors.
You’ll rarely see a skinny person in a cardiac ward.
Chocolate, ice cream, bakery items are normal foods and not junk foods....In fact...chocolate in particular...is good for you.
To be fair, they probably weren’t fat going in. Far fewer fat people in 1943.
Ever since we shunned tobacco people got fat. LOL (joking)
Duh.
Stop giving out free money to buy food that makes people sick? What fascist came up with this idea?
RE: .In fact...chocolate in particular...is good for you.
EVERYTHING IN MODERATION.
And yes, some fasting is good for you.
“I’ve never seen a fat person in picture of concentration camp survivors.”
Irrelevant. We don’t have guards rationing us a potato a day. And SEVERE calorie restriction works - but what works even better - having done low-fat, government approved diets for 45 years - is Keto / IF / Carnivore. Get rid of the carbs and the cravings and weight go away.
Started Keto at 60, after 45 years of yo-yo diets. 7 years later, I will NEVER go back.
People who have never been obese usually have bodies that work fine on “calorie in / calorie out”. People who have become obese - my Mom fed me a diet based on cookies - throw their hormone system out of whack and then “calorie in / calorie out” is a pee-poor way.
Unless the Nazi SS throws them in a concentration camp...
“EVERYTHING IN MODERATION.”
Sorry, but that is silly. Poison is not good for one in moderation. And for someone who has become obese, simple carbs ARE poison.
As long as they get the benefit card they will find a way to buy what they want.
Have you ever been in a Dollar General or similar store? Right at the front of the store is a long wall of gift cards. You can buy the gift card with a snap card. Boy these people on government assistance sure are generous with their gifting.
No, they buy the gift card then use it to buy the junk they want.
I have never been fat, I have been overweight by 10-20 pounds for the last 20 years because my wife feeds me very well. Recently I had a medical condition that caused me to lose 50 pounds and am extremely skinny and malnourished sort of. My doctor gave some Special Protein type shake to try and stay healthy while I keep losinf weight, I only lost 5 pounds in the last month as a result.
It was a Root of a tooth that went bad and made it so I couldn’t eat without extreme pain, never had a tooth ache or pain which is why it took so long for everyone to figure out, my head swelled up like a balloon and have been unable to eat regularly from the extreme pain it causes in my head. Two teeth removed a month ago and it is a very slow recovery, going to doctor this morning for pain meds because it is killimg me.
Moral to this Story is STOP EATING and you will lose weight quickly.
Well, it might be rare, but it does happen. My BIL is skinny as a rail, but had several mini strokes a year ago. They had him in the cardiac ward for almost a week. They had to put in a pacemaker, but also said they can’t find the source of the clots. Point is, it happens.
Oh, and he did get the clot shot and several boosters. So that’s what I’m going with.
Yes, SUGAR in all forms is what causes obesity.
Sugar filled drinks including alcohol is a complex carb.
Foods with sugar in them that are supposed to be healthy for you like granola and protein bars.
Pasta and bread are sugar.
The only good sugar are fruits that you eat without processing them. However, bananas are very high in sugar content.
If you get rid of sodas and junk food on SNAP purchases, the convenience stores run by unscrupulous owners will stop buying the cards at half value and purchasing large quantities of sodas from grocery stores to stock their shelves.
Pretty sure the ebt card can’t be used to buy a gift card. What you’re most likely seeing is someone with an EBT card is buying legit stuff for someone else, then that other person for pennies on the dollar buys a gift card to give to the person with the EBT card.
“You can buy the gift card with a snap card”...
Well...THAT should be stopped immediately! That is crazy stupid.
