Rep. Clay Higgins (R-La.) will not run for Sen. Bill Cassidy’s (R-La.) seat next year after raising speculation that he might, he announced Thursday.
Higgins noted several polls from the GOP Trafalgar Group that indicated Republicans in the state wanted to see him run for the seat and that he had received encouragement to launch a bid.
“Now, it is my considered determination that current engagement in the House being incredibly significant, it may be ultimately more beneficial to the Republic that I remain in service to the MAGA America First agenda as a senior Republican in the House of Representatives,” he continued.
Higgins, who is serving his fifth House term, suggested that if he were to serve in the Senate, “I would no doubt be forced to avert my focused attention from the battles I am currently engaged in, battles that require my very unique set of skills.”
The move clears a lane for Louisiana Treasurer John Fleming to run to the right of Cassidy, a moderate GOP lawmaker, in the 2026 Senate election.
Cassidy’s seat is rated “solid Republican” by the nonpartisan election handicapper Cook Political Report, though Cassidy’s reelection is far from certain, particularly as one of the few remaining Senate Republicans who voted to convict President Trump in 2021.

There's calmer waters like TEXAS we should focus on.
Getting Ken Paxton in the Senate would be a huge victory for grassroots conservatives.
Higgins I like
Fleming is already running. Cassidy’s a dead man walking.
Fleming is already running. Cassidy’s a dead man walking.”
This is good, no splitting the base. That is how so many rinos survive. McCain, Flake, Graham the list goes on and on.
For now he is. There is the rest of this year to make a decision, but right now he wants to focus on the job he currently has. I think he may want to consider it more seriously when 2026 rolls around & sees who thrown their hat into the ring, and if Louisianians are calling for him to replace Cassidy. I won’t vote for Cassidy if another conservative runs against him. If he wins the primary, then I will hold my nose to vote for him, but I pray I do not have to go down that route, because I can’t stand him. He’s a RINO, and I want to send a message to all RINOs that their political careers are slipping away from them.
“I’m afraid this RINO Cassidy is going to be hard to dislodge.
There’s calmer waters like TEXAS we should focus on.”
Maybe. But a primary tends to help him reconsider some of the more stupid decisions he would make. So even if we lose, he will be a better MAGA Republican for the next two years because he’s scared of the primary. After that, if he wins, we get six years of RINO crap. But we would get that if we didn’t primary him.
And, he might lose to a real Republican.
Higgins is neither thoughtless nor overly ambitious.
“I’m afraid this RINO Cassidy is going to be hard to dislodge.”
He will be dislodged next April in the primary. He is finished.
He wouldn’t turn it down if he didn’t see it as risky.
So who’s the most electable genuine conservative in the state senate? That’s someone who could gain positioning for a future congressional run even if not successful here.
“Cassidy’s a dead man walking.”
Let’s hope. He’s counter productive.
Louisiana now has closed primaries.
Finally.
Cassidy has to face Fleming with ONLY GOP voters able to vote.
Cassidy is done. Finished. It won’t be close.
I said it, and I ain’t taking it back.

DJT in the White House but the COC (Chamber of Commerce) Republicans still entrenched in other offices.
Bill Cassidy, Lindsey Graham etc. etc.
The governors Brian Kemp, Kay Ivey, Brad Little, Henry McMaster and the list goes on.
AOC is bad among Democrats but COC is bad among Republicans.
The senate just sucks you need to jettison the 17th
Cassidy must go. During Cabinet hearings, he said and did anything he could to to draw attention to himself. Disgusting.
