US President Donald Trump has signed orders significantly expanding the goods exempted from his new tariffs on Canada and Mexico that were imposed this week.
It is the second time in two days that Trump has rolled back his taxes on imports from the US's two biggest trade partners, measures that have raised uncertainty for businesses and worried financial markets.
On Wednesday, he said he would temporarily spare carmakers from 25% import levies just a day after they came into effect.
...The carveout from the duties applies to goods shipped under North America's free trade pact, the US-Mexico-Canada agreement (USMCA) , which Trump signed during his first term.
Items that currently come into the US under the pact's rules include televisions, air conditioners, avocados and beef, according to analysis by the firm Trade Partnership Worldwide.
The measures also reduced tariffs on potash - a key ingredient for fertiliser needed by US farmers - from 25% to 10%.
Sheinbaum, in a post on X, thanked US President Donald Trump for a “respectful” discussion about the tariffs he imposed.
Sheinbaum said that “virtually all” of Mexico’s trade with the United States is included in the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement.

I believe the issue is...as related to Mexico...is that China dumps their steel in Mexico, it gets converted into a product and enters the USA tariff free under USMCA.
Trump saw the reaction of the stock markets and knew he had to adjust.
I wonder if the threat of tariffs has already had effects
Nonsense. The simple solutions to tariffs is to stop putting tariffs on our goods. Acting like a good neighbor and preventing the trafficking of people & dangerous lethal drugs shouldn’t even need to be requested.
This is how busines cleans house. First, everything is slated to be thrown out. Then each job, each purchase is appraised to see if it advances the bottom line.
He campaigned on tariffs and was elected.
It really is a very simple thing to understand, but because we are a rich nation, they feel obligate to treat us unfairly, and when we erect the same roadblocks their indignation is released, exposing their hypocrisies.
Sadly, conservative outlets such as the National Review Online are examples of those wedded to "Free Trade". Even though we are the only nation who were actually practicing true free trade, even though is was negatively impacting us and allowed our trading partners to benefit financial with trade surpluses.
It just boggles my mind that some still believe that we must hold up those ideals, while we are negatively impacted..
Why? Do these people also allow their neighbors take complete advantage of them and allow them to construct structures on their property for their neighbors to use & enjoy?
Tariffs are taxes.
Taxes are stupid.
Therefore, tariffs are _ _ _ _ _ _.
so what now canadians refuse to lift the tariff?
trump should’ve not paused it, i see him reinstating it again or he’d lose face.
Trump will roll on, regardless.
It’s what he does.
The market was down 4 or 5 hundred. That really nothing. I didn’t even notice it being down 1000 at any point during the day. I don’t know why Trump backed off but I’m 100% certain it’s not because of a quarter of a percent of movement in the markets. People really should stop listening to the media. It’s pure foolery. Another thing I would point out is that no new investments were made into the Mexico or Canadian auto industries yesterday, today and I am hard pressed to imagine any auto companies will be investing in either country so long as this uncertainty persist and I’d suggest that gives the Trump position a lot of power. I have no idea how this will ultimately play out but I think investing now on the markets is not a bad idea 😉
Trump has 4 sets of tariffs for anyone paying attention. Should be a wild 2 months
Because you ignore that they were already placing tariffs on our products which were taxing their citizens & denying us the same access as we afford to them, while making our products sent there more expensive and thus were not being purchased.
So, you say it's okay for them to raise revenue that way, but for it's forbidden? That we deserve to be cheated in the free trade arena?
This nation's government operated for a long time on tariffs. Free trade is awesome, when both trading partners actually reciprocate with free trade with their trading partners, but that has not been happening, and is why we are consistently on the losing end of trade imbalance.
Some of their tariffs were triple digit percentages Think like milk, eggs:
Canada imposes different tariff rates on American dairy products, depending on whether they are within or exceed the import quota. Within the quota, the tariff on milk is 7.5%, while milk that exceeds the quota faces a 241% tariff.
For other dairy products, the tariff rates can be even higher, such as blended dairy powder at 270%.
So, what is your great plan to have a government that actually operates for the people, if both tariffs & taxes are not collected?
I would love to hear it.
Never did any such thing.
Of course you didn't, do you not understand the meaning of "you ignore"?
That was my point, you complete ignored the fact that Canada places tariffs on American products coming into Canada. Apparently, tariffs are taxes only when we do it, but are not when our trading partners use them, in your mind. What it also does for our trading partners benefit, is to give them a positive trade imbalance as they collect the tariffs.
So, where is your plan for operating a government that works for the betterment of the American people if neither taxes nor tariffs are to be used, because as you said they are both stupid?
We live with stupid all around us. It accumulates.
Why add more?
Yup. He is backing off and should have done more research and played his hand closer to the vest.
Nonsense. Every other country has PILES of very high tariffs on US goods, and those of many other nations. Why is America the only nation that is so weak and fragile that it cannot handle the effects of tariffs? You're just a clown repeating empty talking points that have no basis in realty. Sir.
