An Anglo-French plan to deploy up to 30,000 troops as part of a peacekeeping force to bolster Ukraine's security following an impending ceasefire deal with Russia has been labelled an 'unacceptable, direct threat' by the Kremlin.
Sir Keir Starmer is set to outline a proposal during a visit to Washington next week that would see Britain and France take responsibility for safeguarding Ukraine on the ground, provided the US and other NATO countries provide air cover.
Ukraine's armed forces would patrol a demilitarised zone spanning the length of the frontline, while troops from an Anglo-French 'reassurance force' would be stationed at key infrastructure sites across the country.
The Western troop presence would seek to deter future Russian attacks with US fighter jets and missiles remaining on standby in Eastern Europe as a 'backstop'.
NATO air and naval assets would also perform reconnaissance missions over Ukraine and in the Black Sea.
The American backstop would be implemented to ensure 'that 'whatever forces are deployed will not be challenged by Russia,' an official with knowledge of the plan told the Telegraph.
But Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov this morning dismissed the proposal as 'unacceptable' after Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Moscow views the idea of having NATO member troops on the ground in Ukraine as a 'direct threat' to Russian security.
Starmer reportedly hatched the plan in conjunction with French President Emmanuel Macron amid fears the US under Donald Trump could abandon Ukraine altogether after striking a deal directly with Russia, according to the Telegraph.
It comes as the rift between Washington and Kyiv grows wider, with Trump issuing a scathing attack on Volodymyr Zelensky yesterday in which he made several false statements and labelled his Ukrainian counterpart a 'dictator without elections' - even with Ukraine subject to martial law.

Europe should write a book called,” how to start world wars”
Europe does not the the murder machine to end.
Starmer should’nt be in any multi-story building. He should be aware of Putin’s M O. ... Snicker
Boy am I glad we got TWO of them big ol’ Orville Reddenbacher’s popcorns at Sams...
UK is nuts......
Imagine that they were able to manipulate us into fighting the Great War 100 years ago?
The establishment of the UK and France are provoking an American leviathan ready to take them out. Not. Very. Smart.
Nuke Londonastan
Just one nuke in heart of Europe will be lethal in densely populated Europe. Starmer better avoid WW-III.
Couldn’t believe Trump thought this was a good idea the other day.
How could Putin see otherwise that this is equivalent or worse that inducting Ukraine into NATO?
They need our air cover
Seems like an easy “NO”
We are not going to enter WW3 by providing targeting intel vs Russia,
and trying to enforce a “ no fly zone” over a pathetic group of brits and french who the Russians will continue to target along with Ukes…so then what
The entire British army would fit into a large soccer stadium and the French have enough ammo for a few days of combat
Even the Germans are seeing reason
Exactly how would British troops “keep the peace?”
Its a nonsense idea and a terrible deception and provocation by the British permanent deep-state.
OF COURSE Putin/Russia hates the idea of peacekeepers in Ukraine - it would make it more difficult for them to further encroach as they toss anything they agree too in a “ceasefire” - this is the standard MO for Russia - and has been since the entire history of the USSR. This is what was at the core of Reagan’s “trust but verify” slogan. Russia wants ZERO means of verifying their compliance.
No objections here. Europe and UK starting to cope with the idea that they will have to fend for themselves. And fend they must. Putin will not stop unless forced to do so.
But of course they are insisting on an American backstop. They cannot wean themselves from US will power. Not firepower. What the US has, at least sometimes, is a willingness to fight.
I think Trump is “selling out” Ukraine while Vance schools them on freedom to send a message to Europe and UK. Either step and defend yourselves or I will step in and reorder your politics.
It's not our responsibility.
We should have stopped after 1991 and dismantled NATO.
The EU should have taken the lead afterwards.
Perhaps the UK and France are going to have to lead.
Germany is dependent on Russian oil. So that may be a factor here.
Considering the "tooth to tail" ratio, Britain hasn't much at all to offer. The entire point of the PR exercise is for Starmer and Macron to appear "as if" they are stronger than they are. This comes at the same time that Starmer will be politicking President Trump to offer troops. Not gonna happen.
The Daily Mail comments "best" says:

3 hours agoWe don't have the manpower, weaponry or support of the British public to embark on his plan. Meanwhile Britain is struggling with rising inflation, stagnant economic growth and declining living standards.
I read Peskov's statement. It's calm, diplomatic and dismissive of Starmer's scheme but with no hint of any "fury". As Starmer knew it would be when he proposed it. NATO's eastward expansion is one of the sparks that started this dumpster fire.
The Daily Mail is perhaps half a peg better than The Sun on the trash scale but much beloved of Freepers for some curious reason. I recommend TASS. Yes, it's Russian but far more truthful and less hyperbolic than the garbage we routinely consume in the West.
I read my first Tom Clancy book in 1986. Perhaps he was precocious with what you said. Red Storm Rising was a ground based The Hunt for Red October on the ground.
From Wikipedia:
“Red Storm Rising is a war novel, written by Tom Clancy and Larry Bond,[a] and released on August 7, 1986. Set in the mid-1980s, it features a Third World War between the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and Warsaw Pact forces, and is notable for depicting the conflict as being fought exclusively with conventional weapons, rather than escalating to the use of weapons of mass destruction or nuclear warfare. It is one of two Clancy novels, along with SSN (1996), that are not set in the Ryanverse.”

P.S. Note that it was written and released before the fall of the Berlin Wall and certainly the Soviet Union.
