Kentucky bill would restrict select ‘junk food’ from SNAP benefits

proposal that would ban most junk food from being SNAP-eligible is under consideration in Washington, D.C. and in Frankfort.

“The overall goal is to say that we recognize that these choices are not and do not provide good health outcomes,” said Rep. Matt Lockett (R-Nicholasville).

House Bill 279 seeks to exclude energy drinks, prepared desserts, such as cookies and candy, potato and corn chips and soft drinks from being purchased using SNAP benefits.

Rep. Lockett says it is a bill that is part of a larger goal to improve the health of Kentuckians both on and off the program.

“In no way is this trying to take away the free will of anyone,” he said. “That’s not the goal of this legislation whatsoever.”

Invest your snap dollars in Tide and Gain. Then trade it for cash or drugs with local baby-daddys.

SNAP should have the same restrictions as WIC with maybe a limited amount of meat and twice as much fresh produce.

To the people who complain about how we are "restricting people's free choice" you seem to have no trouble doing it to women with small children. So don't be a hypocrite.

Glad to see this. With RFK confirmed to HHS, this will probably end up being nation-wide.

When my boys were growing up, I NEVER bought them junk food. That was Grandma’s job, LOL! Though she’s like me. You eat at MEALTIMES and MAYBE a healthy after-school snack AFTER you walked or rode your bike home from school. An apple, a banana, just a little to tide a growing body over until suppertime, but chores first and homework!

If my kids wanted soda or chips they had to buy it with their own money.

Are the days of others buying Little Debbie Snack Cakes with MY Tax Dollars, over? ;)

America would be a lot better off with ‘Mean Moms’ running things. Looks like we’re going to get one in RFK. ;)

MAHA! MAGA!

Gee, reminded of some song lyrics from about a year ago:

“...Lord, if you’re five-foot-three
and you’re three hundred pounds,
taxes ought not to pay
for your bags of Fudge Rounds...”

Most of the foods in the center aisles of a supermarket are “junk food”....ultra-processed food, chock-full of carbohydrates, preservatives, dyes and other harmful ingredients.

Best to shop only from the produce, meat, frozen vegetables and dairy sections.

Why are Americans so fat? Because they don’t do this.

Years ago, my then husband would occasionally bring home several packages of green giant frozen vegetables. He worked for the Federal Housing Authority. Green giant would donate frozen vegetables to the housing project, but the ladies on the apartment tenant board would throw them in the trash. “We don’t eat that kind of stuff”, they told him.

If WE have to pay for this..

Then I would say that WE have some rights to limit choices.

Whenever I go to Walmart, the carts entirely loaded with ONLY crap foods, soda, chips, candy, are ALWAYS ebt payers.

Food stamps are not to subsidize the recipients but to subsidize the food producers and food retailers.

SNAP can only be used for food items. No toiletries, cleaning or paper products allowed.

I have never understood why this isn’t dictated with the associated federal, as well as state, funds.

Really, however, I’d go back to the beans, rice and cheese handouts.
