Why has 'American primeval' {Netflix TV show} angered the LDS {Mormon} church?
Newsweek ^ | 28th January 2025 | Ryan Smith

Posted on 02/10/2025 12:56:37 AM PST by Cronos

Netflix series American Primeval has come under fire from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-say Saints (LDS), which has branded the show "dangerously misleading."

The Mormon church responded to the series in a release on Friday, calling it "dangerously misleading" and the portrayal of Young "egregiously mischaracterized."

"A recently released streaming series presents a fictionalized interpretation of events in mid-19th century Utah. While historical fiction can be illuminating, this drama is dangerously misleading," the church wrote. "Brigham Young, a revered prophet and courageous pioneer, is, by any historical standard, egregiously mischaracterized as a villainous, violent fanatic. Other individuals and groups are also depicted in ways that reinforce stereotypes that are both inaccurate and harmful."

...The series depicts the Mountain Meadows massacre during the 1857-58 Utah War. In the massacre, settlers of the LDS Church involved in a territorial militia killed 120 American western emigrants.

The church said the series "inaccurately portrays" the massacre "as reflective of a whole faith group."

"Brigham Young, a revered prophet and courageous pioneer, is, by any historical standard, egregiously mischaracterized as a villainous, violent fanatic. Other individuals and groups are also depicted in ways that reinforce stereotypes that are both inaccurate and harmful.

"As to the Mountain Meadows Massacre, which the series inaccurately portrays as reflective of a whole faith group, the church has long acknowledged and condemned this horrific tragedy. It has also taken significant steps to uncover and share the full truth of what happened and promote healing.

Wikipedia article on the Mountain Meadows Massacre
The Mountain Meadows Massacre (September 7–11, 1857) was a series of attacks during the Utah War that resulted in the mass murder of at least 120 members of the Baker–Fancher wagon train.[1][a] The massacre occurred in the southern Utah Territory at Mountain Meadows, and was perpetrated by settlers from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) involved with the Utah Territorial Militia (officially called the Nauvoo Legion) who recruited and were aided by some Southern Paiute Native Americans

After arriving in Salt Lake City, the Baker–Fancher party made their way south along the Mormon Road, eventually stopping to rest at Mountain Meadows. The party's journey occurred amidst hostilities between Mormon settlers and the U.S. government, with war hysteria rampant amongst the Mormons.

local Mormon militia leaders, including Isaac C. Haight and John D. Lee, made plans to attack them as they camped at the meadow. The leaders of the militia, wanting to give the impression of tribal hostilities, persuaded Southern Paiutes to join with a larger party of militiamen disguised as Native Americans in an attack on the wagon train.

During the militia's first assault, the travelers fought back, and a five-day siege ensued. Eventually, fear spread among the militia's leaders that some immigrants had caught sight of the white men, likely discerning the actual identity of a majority of the attackers. As a result, militia commander William H. Dame ordered his forces to kill the travelers. By this time, the travelers were running low on water and provisions, and allowed some members of the militia – who approached under a white flag – to enter their camp. The militia members assured the immigrants they were protected, and after handing over their weapons, the immigrants were escorted away from their defensive position. After walking a distance from the camp, the militiamen, with the help of auxiliary forces hiding nearby, attacked the travelers. The perpetrators killed all the adults and older children in the group, in the end sparing only seventeen young children ages six and under.

Note that this is not in the Religion Forum but the general one (as it is a TV show) - I watched the first two episodes and found it quite good - but graphically violent.

It did leave bad impressions for me of Brigham young and the Mormon leadership, though it does have a young man who is Mormon who is a “goodish” character.

The series doesn’t spare anyone - except the US army - there is violence by the settlers, the Mormons, the Paiute, the Shoshone, etc. etc.

The MOrmons killed 120 American western emigrants in the name of their version of “god.”

We have Islamofascists doing the same thing today across the Western world.

Mormon Jihadhis, doing the worK of who?

Almost every organized religion has a desperate, historical dark side.

Mormons are no exception.

Today MOrmons tend to be exemplary citizens of the United States, and like just about all religions concerning Divine Providence......Hollywood leftists will do what they can to undo the goodness of religious Americans

That’s why the AG of California is still surgically mutilating mentally ill children, despite President Trump’s executive order barring such mutilation. The uncivilized now control California just as they control Hollywood.

Do Mormons enjoy Sherlock Holmes? His first published adventure is a scathing critique of them. I’ve always wondered if they are able to look past that.

This summary seems like an attack on religion in general:

“This is America...1857,” reads a summary of the series. “Up is down, pain is everywhere, innocence and tranquillity are losing the battle to hatred and fear. Peace is the shrinking minority, and very few possess grace—even fewer know compassion.

“There is no safe haven in these brutal lands, and only one goal matters: survival. American Primeval is a fictionalized dramatization and examination of the violent collision of culture, religion, and community as men and women fight and die to keep or control this land.”

In fact, apart from this one INCIDENT, the notion of “the Wild, Wild West” has been derided in general as a myth:

“In contrast, an alternative literature based on actual history concludes that the civil society of the American West in the nineteenth century was not very violent. Eugene Hollon writes that the western frontier “was a far more civilized, more peaceful and safer place than American society today”. Terry Anderson and P. J. Hill affirm that although “[t]he West . . . is perceived as a place of great chaos, with little respect for property or life,” their research “indicates that this was not the case; property rights were protected and civil order prevailed. Private agencies provided the necessary basis for an orderly society in which property was protected and conflicts were resolved”.

“What were these private protective agencies? They were not governments because they did not have a legal monopoly on keeping order. Instead, they included such organizations as land clubs, cattlemen’s associations, mining camps, and wagon trains.

“So-called land clubs were organizations established by settlers before the U.S. government even surveyed the land, let alone started to sell it or give it away. Because disputes over land titles are inevitable, the land clubs adopted their own constitutions, laying out the “laws” that would define and protect property rights in land. They administered land claims, protected them from outsiders, and arbitrated disputes. Social ostracism was used effectively against those who violated the rules. Establishing property rights in this way minimized disputes—and violence.”

Didn’t LDS have people called “Avenging Angels” going out and killing people they regarded as some kind of threat?

Brigham was a Pervert and pure evil just like his pal Joseph Smith, having sex with young girls and other peoples wives was their thing.(Adultery and Trafficking). Not sure why they murdered all those people at Mountain Meadows - I’ve been there and seen the Monument. They used to claim the people were enemies from Missouri; but that was a lie.

Mormonism is a dark and sinister cult that feeds on Christians by at first making them believe they are merely moving to a different Christian denomination by lying to them and deceiving them with “milk before meat” as they are seduced into an entirely unique cult religion where one becomes gods themselves and the inner secrets of the cult are unknown even to the rank and file members who are examined/investigated and then issued special ID cards requiring periodic reexamining, to be allowed into the Temples of the secrets, access forbidden to those lesser members who must attend the plain and simple buildings of cult worship.

“”””the inner secrets of the cult are unknown even to the rank and file members who are examined/investigated and then issued special ID cards””””

That should be -”except to the rank and file members who are examined/investigated and then issued special ID cards”.

after handing over their weapons

People who want to take your weapons ALWAYS plan to do something to you that you wouldn't tolerate if you were armed.

Yes, I can see what you say but then again, we do have freedom of religion in America, guaranteed by the Bill of Rights.

We just refuse to laud them, just like we refuse to praise the religion of Vodun in New Orleans.

And remember. we also have YHWH who sorts out the not humans and demonics, using the Darwin Awards.

Now there is a TV series about Mormonism, a cult that had to change (polygamy), at least temporarily to deal with the federal government. Exposure of the Mormon cult is important and needs to be done.

By the way, religions and cults can be illegal in America, calling something a religion does not guarantee a group can do everything.

I’ve noticed that Mormon and Masonic temples are architecturally almost indistinguishable. I’m sure it’s just a co-incidence.
