US bans popular red dye from foods — 35 years after it was banned in cosmetics

The FDA today has issued an order today that will ban Red No. 3 from food products and ingested drugs.

The dye, which was approved to use in 1907, has been banned in cosmetics and topical drugs since 1990 over evidence that it can cause cancer. Its use in food is already banned or restricted in Australia, Japan and countries in the EU.

Red No. 3. is commonly found in candy, gum, and cookies, including Brach’s candy corn, Betty Crocker sprinkles, and strawberry Ensure.

Food manufacturers will have until January 15, 2027 to remove it from all products, while makers of ingested drugs will have until January 18, 2028.

The new ban is based on the Delaney Clause of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, which was enacted in 1960. The Delaney Clause prohibits the FDA from authorizing any food or color additive that has been found to cause cancer.

So even 35 years ago, they knew the additive was harmful. Harmful enough to ban from cosmetics, but okay to add to our food products.

But even still, companies have 2 years to remove it from their food products.

I remember my mom buying red pistachios. They’d stain your fingers for days. I haven’t seen those for a while though.

Red 40 was known to be a problem back in the 1980s.

Banned it in stuff you put on your skin, but OK for people to ingest it.

We are governed by idiots.

Not as common anymore, but you can still find them.

Not to change the subject.
RFK jr wrote the book: “The Real Anthony Fauci.”
In this book he stated many things that show Fauci is a monster. That he was responsible for the deaths of potentially millions during the AIDS crisis. Long before he pushed the Covid-19 vaccines. Yet, Fauci has not SUED him. IF the things Bobby wrote were not true you would think Fauci would have sued him for hundreds of millions of dollars. Yet NADA.

... In fact, the FDA previously announced that intended to ban it in food in 1992 but ultimately did not take action because of the resources that would be needed to remove its authorization...

???

Probably a stupid question..

But why does a drug/ pharmacutical NEED red (or any) dye?

does medication need to look appealing?
