Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) was assaulted by a “pro-trans man” on Capitol grounds Tuesday evening, according to posts to Mace’s social media accounts. Capitol Police informed reporters a man had been arrested for “assaulting a government official.” Mace posted that her arm was injured, requiring a brace and some ice.

It’s in the same vein as assault on a police officer, and I’m all in favor of higher penalties on that offense. Not because they’re nobility, but because they’re purportedly the first line of defense against public safety threats. You attack a cop, and you attack the society as a whole because you undermine its defense.

Start vigorously investigating, prosecuting, and punishing assaults and abuses of power BY public SERVANTS, and I might reconsider. At this point, I don't think our public SERVANTS are worthy of the extra protection. They treat it as "nobility".

Police are not “preferred” because they are “royalty,” but because they are afforded additional authority from the state that the average citizen doesn’t possess. You cannot dispute that police can do certain things legally that citizens cannot do, such as detain certain offenders for crimes witnessed (in Texas, a non-LEO citizen may detain a person who committed a crime only for felonies.) Police may also go into locations, both private and public, openly armed that citizens may not (schools, hospitals, etc.)

Again, when you openly assault the front line of defense of society, you are assaulting all of society’s safety and well-being. I’m not referring to police officers not acting in their official duties (off-duty, plain clothes, etc.) but those while acting under the color of authority of the state.

There's your fundamental error. Public servants in State, County, or City livery are not the front line of defense. We are. You are. I am. Not some public servant who isn't anywhere near when some criminal attempts to offend against you or me.

Finally, it has become clear that "assault on a police officer" has become an excuse used by our servants to physically assault citizens when the servant's feelings get hurt. They've abused their protections, they need to lose those protections.
