Nearly 30 percent of US pharmacies closed between 2010 and 2021, according to a new study in the health-policy publication Health Affairs.
The research, led by University of California Berkeley assistant professor Jenny S. Guadamuz and colleagues, analyzed data from the National Council for Prescription Drug Programs, county health statistics, and ZIP Code demographic surveys.
Of the 88,930 retail pharmacies operating in 2010, almost one-third shuttered by 2021, with those in predominantly Black and Latino neighborhoods disproportionately affected.
Independent pharmacies were hit hardest, with closures occurring at a higher rate than chain pharmacies regardless of location or market conditions.
Black and Latino communities faced the greatest loss, creating "pharmacy deserts" that limit access to critical health services, such as medications, vaccinations, and health screenings.
The report highlighted systemic inequities, noting that pharmacies in neighborhoods with a higher percentage of Black or Latino residents were at greater risk for closure than those in predominantly White areas.
Without intervention, the closures threaten to exacerbate health disparities in communities already struggling with higher rates of chronic conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease, the report said.
FAFO....
THEFT.
First big corporations take on debt to drive independent pharmacies out of business. Once they corner the market they downsize to contain costs and start charging higher prices. We need a huge burst of antitrust activity because I am tired of living under the rule of gigantic corporations run by psychopaths.
Well, golly gosh. I have no idea why!!
Where I come from, it usually stands for First And Final Offer.
There is also a shortage of actual pharmacists. Especially in rural areas. A pharmacy can’t stay open without a pharmacist to fill the prescriptions.

STEAL A STORE INTO CLOSING
Well. Some addresses can’t have nice things. Whyte oppression.
Well for one, I’m tired of having to call for an attendant to open a locked casing just to get a product.
My pharmacy is in what could be described as a nice area. The manager told me he catches one shoplifter a day. How many he doesn’t catch is anyone’s guess.
The odd thing is that he never calls the police. He just makes the thief return the merchandise. Company policy, maybe?

Move to deeper flyover country....
Same here.
I subscribe and get deliveries when possible.
I live in Memphis. Four years of rampant theft with no consequences has an effect. It just takes time. Now six out of ten chain drug stores have closed and removed their logo from the buildings. Meanwhile, the Marxist moron mayor, Paul Young, wants to sue them for leaving, sue Hyundai and Kia because their cars are stolen most often. The grocery stores are shutting down too.
Travelers have known about them for quite a while.
Aka high deserts.
In Colorado, for example.
This wasn’t due to that variant of a greed motive (at least not this time.) The massive unprosecuted retail thefts were.

No business can survive massive shoplifting.
There is that as well.
I wonder what the financial benefit is to politicians in California to allow this kind of carnage from shoplifting.
