UnitedHealthcare's disturbing track record of rejecting claims has come under the spotlight after the insurance giant's CEO was shot dead in what is believed to have been a targeted attack in the heart of Manhattan.
Brian Thompson, 50, was gunned down around 6:45am on Wednesday outside a Hilton Hotel in Midtown. The masked attacker remains on the loose and has not yet been identified. Their motive for the shooting has not been disclosed.
UnitedHealthcare was being probed by the Department of Justice for alleged antitrust violations, while its parent company, UnitedHealthcare Group (UHG), has come under fire from angry patients who claim the insurer refused to cover their care.
UHG is the nation's largest health insurance conglomerate. The company expected to bring in revenues of $450 billion in 2025, with Thompson believed to earn a salary in the region of $10million a year.
In July, more than 150 protesters from the People's Action Institute campaign group gathered outside UHG's headquarters in Minnetonka, Minnesota, in what became a fiery demonstration.
Police moved in and arrested 11 people who were later charged with misdemeanors related to blocking the public highway outside the building, according to online clinical publication Dark Daily.
'UnitedHealth Group's profiteering by denying care is a disgrace, leaving people across Minnesota and all of the United States without the care they desperately need,' campaigners wrote in a letter to UHG's CEO Andrew Witty.

He shall not be missed. What an evil ass. Glad that he received some divine retribution.
WTAF?
They created a lot of frustrated, angry customers.
A very long list of suspects, IMHO.
A standard Daily Mail garbage headline - they are conflating vague accusations of “rejecting claims” with the CEO’s assassination.
That’s not journalism. That’s emotive, baseless, propaganda
Work in insurance do you?
Also, he shall not be missed. What an evil ass. Glad that he received some divine retribution.
Retribution for wife/mother/child having died as a result of their denial of healthcare?.................
Obviously.
Perhaps.
I have to take the conspiracy theory side of this. Some reports say the guy had a suppressor and he seems to have got away clean. Disgruntled customer? The growing Narrative says that this must be a the case. My feeling is different. Seems like a professional hit to silence a figure who might have been a threat to the industry as Trump (RFK jr) comes into office and will start asking questions.
Can you explain why you say this about him, to those of us who never had an insurance claim or policy with United Healthcare? I know nothing about him other than he was executed by what appears to be a pro Hit Man. It was not random. What are we missing here?
The media has no idea why this guy was shot. They are making all this up and trying to destroy United Health Care probably to benefit some Democrat. This is pathetic and it is not journalism.
HAS to be an inside job. Shot at 6:46AM by a gunman waiting for him? How would anyone know where he was except someone in his inner circle. This was a HIT. Follow the money! Someone mad millions and felt in jeopardy IF this CEO started “singing” to save his own skin.
I suspect that the dead ceo was as crooked as the day as long and someone had him killed to protect themselves from testimony or, one of the thousands of customers that they screwed over on claims decided revenge must be had.
Man, didn’t know United was so bad. TV’s say otherwise. Guess people will find out now!
Had UHC for 7 years, never paid more than the $35-$50 office visit costs.
“Man, didn’t know United was so bad.”
I’ve had UHC for 30 years with zero problems. I don’t understand the hate going their way.
Convenient it was one of the industries communists hate.
