Democrat Pitches Secession Where New York, 3 More States Would Join Canada to Resist Donald Trump

A Democrat state lawmaker in New York is calling for a coalition of northeast states to secede from the Union and join Canada because President-elect Donald Trump is returning to the White House.

State Sen. Liz Krueger (D-28), who is also floating a scheme to withhold upwards of $300 billion in federal taxes, defended her ideas in a conversation with Politico.

“It’s not unreasonable to think outside of the box,” Kreuger, chairwoman of the Senate Finance Committee, told the outlet.

After the Late Unpleasantness Between the States, Congress rolled 10 states into 5 military districts. Granted, military districts are not defined in the Constitution, but that's what happened. The senators and congressmen from those states were expelled from Congress. The military controlled them until the states could come up with new state constitutions that did not include slavery and those state constitutions passed muster with Congress.

The states also had to ratify the 14th Amendment, but that was legally flaky. Neither military districts nor territories can ratify amendments, only states, and these states were no longer states according to Congress. (Had Lincoln lived, he would have disputed that aspect of it.) The Supreme Court addressed this tangentially in 1939 and decided to keep that can of worms firmly shut. After all, war was on the horizon.

Throw in Illinois and Michigan and it would all but guarantee the end of the Democrat party. Can you imagine those states that were providing the majority of troops in CW I cut and run on the US?
