A recent study found there is a stark difference in what Gen Z and Boomers think about financial success.
In its study published on Friday, Empower said, “Is there a secret to financial success? Most Americans (52%) say ‘yes’ — and the average salary considered successful is $270,000 per year, and $5.3 million in overall net worth.”
For Gen Z, financial success looks like an annual salary of $587,797, while Boomers think it is $99,874.

i hear McD’s is hiring
gen z is too stupid to understand the difference in a salary and net worth apparently.
If they live in high cost cities then everything is very expensive.
If they live in low cost more rural areas it is a lot cheaper.
I was happy when I crossed over 100 grand - but that’s a boomer talking...
No wonder they are all pissed off.
Let’s see now...
- In the mid 80s, a typical starting engineering salary was like $25-30K, with the latter being in high cost areas like California
- Since then we’ve experienced about 5X in home price inflation, way more in high priced areas (again, California)
- So even on an average basis, a starting salary should be like $150K / yr. But...it’s like half that. Thus the current “affordability” crisis.
So the kids are right, and they know who to blame: The Boomer Gang.
No reason to be pissed off. A person could be perfectly happy with a $40,000 salary. It all depends on how they structure their life and requirements. It is a pipe dream to think of having a $587,797 salary. There are mayors, governors and company bosses that get by on far less and they're happy.
It gets me when I read about some media stars that are reported to have a net worth of $1M to $2M as if that is a lot. They have nice homes and fancy stuff, but are deep in debt. A person could have a $50,000 salary and build up a $5M net worth if they are careful about spending and investments.
Gen Z people are deluded into thinking they will achieve such a high salary. Just work hard and prepare for you future.
$587,797 is roughly what a friend of mine makes.
But he’s Chief of Staff and board certified pulmonologist at a local hospital.
Someone has ridiculous expectations.
A $270,000 salary? A net worth of $5 million plus? Delusional.
all dust in the wind
They have no clue what real wealth is. It aint money, fame, your car, your house.
God's grace, the good you do for others. The memories you leave others when you pass.
What services are they willing to provide for that kind of dough?
They watch a lot of twitch and OF ‘streamers’ that indeed make many millions and all they’ll have to do is hook up a cam and go.
I’ve seen some of the ‘ladies’ on podcasts go on about how making $300kk or so really isn’t that hard and any man worth their salt should be able to have that. It’s a part of the ‘666’ fallacy many younger women have now.
They might me on to something as Boomers have almost all reached retirement, and Gen X is approaching retirement, the labor supply will shrink, and the value of labor will increase.
Good for them to have high ambitions.
Indeed. I watched part of a video on Philippine women on the subject of young American women being deluded about wanting rich men to marry them. American young gals want guys making $500,000 and giving them $200,000 rings. Without having to cook or do housework. The Philippina gals say what would the American women do for these men? The Philippina gals say they would cook and clean and be happy, that anyone can learn to cook and clean. One reason young men are going to Asia to find wives.
A lot of deluded Gen Z people who are greedy, and not being grateful for the simple things in life. They'll end up poor, homeless, unmarried into their 50's.
The Zers be lucky to be able to more the decimals on those goals one place to the left.
“A $270,000 salary? A net worth of $5 million plus?”
Depends on the age of the person. If they expect that at age 30, they are nuts. I’ve know a few people in the past decade who have achieved that in their 30s.
If they expect that when they retire at 65 (30 or 35 years from now), it is doable with hard work and good investments.
Exactly. It's all about priorities and how you handle your money. As long as you earn enough to make ends meet...
“One reason young men are going to Asia to find wives.”
I’ve read more than once that Australian men going to Asia to work find Asian chicks soooo much nicer than what’s at home and wind up marrying them and leaving the leftist gimme dat Australian bitches to themselves. These women are the ones that voted Australia into a leftist paradise.
That could pretty much be said here.
