President-elect Donald Trump’s new Department of Government Efficiency, a nongovernmental entity helmed by billionaire Elon Musk and biotech entrepreneur and former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, is expected to make a push for an end to remote work across federal agencies as a way to help reduce the federal workforce through attrition.
Both Musk and Ramaswamy have recently publicly lamented the number of employees working remotely across the government.
A source familiar with early discussions about the focus of DOGE, as the initiative is known, told CNN that while nothing is final, early priorities include an effort to immediately end remote work across federal agencies, making a five-day work week a requirement for all federal employees.
“It’s a no-brainer step and many companies have done this. So why shouldn’t federal employees who are paid with taxpayer dollars be required to be in office?” the source said.
The thinking is this kind of mandate, coupled with moving agencies out of Washington, DC, would cause many federal workers to voluntarily leave, helping the new Trump administration thin out the federal workforce ranks and save the government money.
Ending remote work across government is being considered a potential “early candidate” for executive orders that members of DOGE will recommend to Trump, the source said. “It’s definitely on the table,” the source said, though it’s unclear how much they believe this will save the federal government.

…to God’s ear
Moving the HQ to Northern Alaska with mandatory in office attendance will weed them out in a hurry.
I assume the workers will sue, and it will be dragged out in the courts for years.
Most Federill “workers” are too lazy and/or dysfunctional to get a job in the private sector.
And they know it.
I see pink in a lot of gov workers future.
Let the workers sue—in their new offices on Guam.
No-show jobs are deeply saddened.

Works for me. January 20th can't come fast enough!
That should be a day one EO. Give them a week to report to work and after that 5 days a week at the office.
How many have moved over the past several years and now live nowhere near their office.
They can loaf in the office as well as at home.
They’re also going to give 2 year salary separation packages to people. It will still save money. There are many ways to skin a cat.
This could change the political complexion of northern Virginia for the better.
Great point. I didn’t even think of that! :-)
I had a job once that had me in the car anywhere from 4 to 6 hours a day and writing reports from home the rest of the day. I would easily put 2,000 miles a week on a company vehicle.
Once again written from the perspective of: “omg, how would the country possibly operate without the most essential workers?!?!”
So CNN expects us to what? Mourn, be afraid, give a crap?
My best friend was at a seminar last weekend and she met someone who works remotely for DOD. This person says she gets a full paycheck every month for doing almost nothing and has another job which she intends to keep when she is notified that she’s being let go.
If a Fed worker quits, will the world notice?
Tell a DC govt worker they’re being transferred to Boise, Idaho and have to work in the office. 😏
No…please…don’t stop!
