HOUSTON — The union for 45,000 United States dockworkers agreed to suspend their strike until Jan. 15 to provide time to negotiate a new contract, according to an Associated Press source.
U.S. ports from Maine to Texas shut down Tuesday when the union representing about 45,000 dockworkers went on strike for the first time since 1977. The strike began at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday and halted operations at ports from Brownsville to Boston.
The International Longshoremen’s Association wants significantly higher wages and a total ban on the automation of cranes, gates and container-moving trucks used in the loading or unloading of freight at 36 U.S. ports.
Those ports handle roughly half of the nations’ cargo from ships.
The contract between the ILA and the United States Maritime Alliance, which represents the ports, expired Tuesday. Some progress was reported in talks late Monday, but the union went on strike anyway.

Panic buying of bottled water is even more absurd than the run on toilet paper. Do people think that the water in their taps is delivered by ship?
Automation is coming to the ports come Hell or High Water.
“Exactly. The Harris/Walz internal polling must not be in the Democrats favor with this strike.”
Look at it this way. Biden openly said he will not get involved. Which means Harris cannot take credit for the workers going back to work.
Purely a political maneuver to help the democrats. A strike during the upcoming holiday season would have been ideal... but waiting until after?
Throwing away a powerful bargaining chip?
Union leadership must have gotten a call.
Maybe that call even was part of a plan to stack crisises upon the next president in a coordinated manner. The 15 January date is a Wednesday... why strike in the middle of the week. Why not a Monday?
Disagree. I believe Daggett realized that Harris’ and Biden’s support of the ILA would backfire once rising prices and shortages hit the public and that would kill Harris’ chances. I don’t think they expected open support from Biden. Now Biden and Harris can have union support and the public doesnt suffer and takes it out on the Dems. After Nov 5 no one cares about the public.
He would walk with UAW but not get involved in an economy crushing port strike? Must not be on the Nov ballot.
Biden probably offered the union boss a non prosecution lifetime get out of jail card.
I don’t expect people to know where every item they buy is made.
Perhaps that is something a “professional shopper” would know because for her it is job-related. People often make the mistake of expecting everyone else to know what they know because it seems so basic to them.
Example: I am shocked when people can’t even integrate e^x.
A job is worth what "it's worth".
Just like fast-food employees, they're not worth that much.
The union leaders, RATs all, want the effects of a strike to be felt by the new Trump administration. They think long-term and are planning two elections ahead.
Based on the new date to commence a strike, I’d wager our President is already working on a response. Four dimension chess master.
I live in Myrtle Beach. People are buying out the toilet paper left and right. We have a Georgia Pacific plant in Georgetown. 45 minutes away that makes toilet paper. These panic people, for a lack of better words, DUMB ASSES.
I stock up because they don’t always have the TP variation we like at Costco. We’re set for at least a month.
Exactly. I would imagine the majority are unloading containers from the ships and put them onto the truck frames and the others parking them in the appropriate spot. It’s not exactly a high skilled job. Sure, it takes some training and experience to be good at it, but it’s something that can can probably be learned by anyone in a couple weeks
Some of us smarter dipshits know that when the supply chain breaks down in one place there are ripple effects in other places that can take weeks to resolve.
Some of you dumber dipshits just want to blame others for your own lack of preparedness. You got lucky this time.
“C’mon, man. Can’t you guys this on Trump? We gotta’n ‘lection comin’”—Go Brandon
Automation doesn’t just make work faster and more efficient. It also reduces…”loss.”
I expect people to be a little smarter than they are nowadays… Apparently I’m wrong. We are not evolving as a species
Obama 2nd term. Thought he was going to lose due to the economy and secured a smaller venue before election night. And just like that, voters voted him back in. How bad does America need to get for voters to vote out their Democrat choice.
