HOUSTON — The union for 45,000 United States dockworkers agreed to suspend their strike until Jan. 15 to provide time to negotiate a new contract, according to an Associated Press source.
U.S. ports from Maine to Texas shut down Tuesday when the union representing about 45,000 dockworkers went on strike for the first time since 1977. The strike began at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday and halted operations at ports from Brownsville to Boston.
The International Longshoremen’s Association wants significantly higher wages and a total ban on the automation of cranes, gates and container-moving trucks used in the loading or unloading of freight at 36 U.S. ports.
Those ports handle roughly half of the nations’ cargo from ships.
The contract between the ILA and the United States Maritime Alliance, which represents the ports, expired Tuesday. Some progress was reported in talks late Monday, but the union went on strike anyway.

> Oh goodie, now Costco can restock the toilet paper the panic horders sucked off the shelves.
> I couldn’t believe it, no toilet paper at Costco this afternoon... hopefully Costco has a no return policy on TP.
People are idiots and often act like cattle.
Paper goods are made in the good old USA, and don’t need docks or dockworkers. Jeez, people, calm down.
Most of our paper machines in the US can't even run on domestic pulp, even if it were available. After they offload in ports, they are put on rail cars for just in time delivery. The largest producer is Suzano. It would take a year to convert fabrics, felts, chemistry needs, to change.
I wonder if President in Exile Trump made a few calls this week? Not that he wants to help Heels Up Harris, but because he actually LOVES America/Americans?
“How in TF do you make it to her age and know absolutely zero about your own country?”
She was either raised by Socialist Democrats of Wolves. Same result. ;)
Gives me more time to lay in a stck of TP
“The January surprise.”
*************
Good point. The first of many after Trump gets into office.
Softwood pulp Yankee machines put out about 30% of the production as imported Eucalyptus hardwood pulp. Also the EPA won't allow it to be bleached white, and nobody can use epichlorohydrine temporary wet strength resins anymore, which slows you down with softwood.
Every 3 months paper makers give employees a product giveaway. Usually about three cases of bath tissue and two cases of paper towels.(paper towels use poly vinyl alcohol resins from either India or China). My wife and I both worked for paper mills for 40 years. We have a two car garage filled to the rafters with toilet paper. We supplied our whole neighborhood street of neighbors during Covid.
Your closer to what might be the truth than you think.
Trump dealt with the mob in NYC. Had no choice since the construction unions were controlled by the mob back then. Still do. In order to get ANYTHING done, he had to deal with them.
This bald headed blathering pile of bull shit union president is connected. The mob does NOT like it when someone draws attention like that idiot did.
IMO, that pile of .... had to go to a sit down with the boss and found out he was lucky to get outta there alive. He will go the way of Jimmy Hoffa eventually.
As far as Trump? He reached out to some people and cautioned them about what will happen if they don’t back off.
IMO.
Oh, I agree...Bet the Union dropped a mother load in the Dem coffers and are still laughing....cuz we all know this will be passed to the consumer....
wait, what? are there going to be rioting masses of “returners” at Cosco now?
yes, yes, eliminate people.
how about not raising communists for few generations?
Was at Costco a half hour ago (not to panic buy) and saw some guy pile on 24 buckets of emergency food at $70 a pop. On the way home was breaking news on the tentative deal. My wife and I broke out laughing, knowing he was going to return those buckets tomorrow. It’s comical.
Earlier today, the strike was Trump’s fault. So now, I suppose ByeDone and Harris will get credit for the return to work.
In a worst-case scenario where the port strike delays shipments of eucalyptus pulp to U.S. manufacturers, shoppers should be able to at least purchase commercial-grade toilet paper. Commercial-grade toilet paper is made from recycled paper that’s sourced domestically.

That’s acceptable, just so long as you weren’t in an irrational panic when making your purchase.
Away from home producers aren't tooled up in converting either.
ICWYDT
yep
totally political move
These pigs knew it was bad timing. They planned this a while back, then went for it during this hurricane devastation.
They’ll be back at in in January. They are filthy pigs. Our government SHOULD be making plans to get rid of them all between now and then.
