Will Indian ammunition for Ukraine strain Modi’s ties with Russia’s Putin?
Al Jazeera ^ | 1st October 2024 | Sanjay Kapooer

India’s Modi has tried to play peacemaker between Russia and Ukraine. But reports that Ukraine is using Indian shells could complicate those efforts.

Visiting Moscow in early July, Modi described Russia as New Delhi’s “trusted ally” and “all-weather friend”, referring to the decades-old strategic collaboration between the two nations.

Yet, less than three months later, that relationship is being tested, especially after reports that Kyiv has accessed Indian ammunition and is using it in the Russia-Ukraine war. Indian shells, bought by Italy and the Czech Republic, have been routed to Ukraine. The report follows a series of battlefront images that have emerged in recent months showing Indian ammunition being used by Ukrainian forces to push back against Russia.

Meanwhile, Modi has held a string of meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, beginning in June in Tokyo, then in a first-ever visit by an Indian PM to Kyiv in August, and finally, last week, in New York on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal described news reports of Ukraine using Indian ammunition as “speculative and mischievous”. He denied that India had violated any rules but did not specifically deny the presence of Indian shells in Ukraine’s armoury.

But Russian officials are unconvinced by India’s response, and pose a central question: Has New Delhi pressured buyers of its shells to make sure it does not reach the war in Ukraine?

...If Indian ammunition is making its way to Ukraine, it would not be the only instance of Indian weapons being used in current wars. In June, Al Jazeera revealed how rockets and explosives manufactured by Indian companies were being shipped to Israel amid the devastating war on Gaza, in which more than 41,000 people have been killed.

My opinion is that it will have a minimum impact on Indo-Russian ties.

India see's itself as non-aligned from both Russia and Ukraine. It is grateful to the USSR/Russia for 1971, but under Modi it realizes that that was 50 years ago and while still friendly is no longer "we forgive anything friend" with Russia - especially as Russia cozies up to China.

Al Jazzeera is more interested in stopping Indias supply to Israel, something India is not coy about. Significant deliveries are taking place, even of Large drones originally to be made for Indian Arm use. Another firm is supplying 10,000 FPV drones. Lots of 155mm shells have gone to Israel too, paying back a debt incurred during the Kargil war.

India has also pointed out Russian supply to Pakistan.

In the game of nations, Russia will complain, India will temporize, and both countries will act as they chose in pursuit of their separate interests.

“Indian shells, bought by Italy and the Czech Republic, have been routed to Ukraine.”

That’s more like end user fraud, not India supporting Ukraine. Not an issue.

the front-line has barely moved since October 2023

Russia lost the areas in yellow

And Russia's attempt to take a headshot (back in FEb 2022 with the attack on Kyiv) failed.

Net-net, Ukraine already won - way back in December 2022 - by not succumbing to the headshot attempt.

India hates whites. The Brits gave them good reason to. They’ll play one off the other. It doesn’t help that we cozied up to Pakistan over the Soviets. We do have moron common with the Russians than we do India and Trump will go to work on it.
How about a 20 million Sikh country?

Btw-49er game. Sea of red in the stands. One fan wore bright red turban-funny.

“India” doesn’t “hate whites”. Neither do Indians in general.

The Brits were actually more manipulators than conquerors. In fact the BJP Hindutva party considers that the Brits helped the Hindus get out from Mohammedan rule - which isn’t quite true as the Marathas did that mainly.

Thanks for the history lesson. They supported the Soviets when KAL 007 was shot down in ‘83. So did Greece btw. We need to keep these people at arms length. India has problems with the Chicoms, the muslims and the Siks in their own country. They should know better than to disappoint a country they may need. Just look at the military junk they buy from Russia.

Britain did establish peaceful & orderly government, a trend which continues in every country that Britain had as a colony - the US, Canada, Australia, NZ, several West-Indies island countries, etc.

And not many other countries can make that boast

Very good. Is there a book out there in defense of colonialism? I enjoyed Franz Fanon’s book about the wretched.

Buried in all that yellow are 700,000 Ukrainians and Poles. Russia sent 90,000 men in a lightening raid to force a diplomatic settlement. Actually, those 90,000 combat troops were the backbone of the les than 400,000 that destroyed Ukraines 1.2m military.

We notice your map is not updated to reflect the current military positioning.

Last week was the last hurrah for Biden/Zelinski’s gambit. Now that yellow area on the map will be reverting to Red.
