The death toll from catastrophic flooding in the Asheville area of western North Carolina more than tripled on Monday to 35 — as survivors in remote mountain towns described seeing the bodies of victims stuck in trees.
Nationwide, there have been 120 fatalities from Hurricane Helene, which has cut a path of death and destruction across the Southeast since making landfall last Thursday.
The rains smashed the mountains of Buncombe County, which contains Asheville, washing away whole communities in floodwaters and mudslides. Roadways were buried or washed away, leaving victims cut off from rescue crews.
“There were bodies in trees. They were finding bodies under rubble,” said Alyssa Hudson, whose home of Black Mountain — a village of 8,400 people about 12 miles from Asheville — was all but washed away.

Some places in the North Carolina mountains got over 30 inches of rain. Thirty inches. Merely two to three inches in the mountains is perhaps equivalent to the damage that would be caused by two to three feet of rain in lowland areas. Thirty inches in the mountains is more than cataclysmic. It was simply something that couldn't be expected or predicted.
It is horrific what they are doing to this great country.
My friend lived just yards from the river.
Lost everything but her two dogs that she fled with.

We had extremely limited cell phone coverage after Katrina, and that was in flat land, where a line of sight might be miles. A week after the storm, I was able to receive inbound calls on my land line, but could not call out. I had no electricity for a month (my home was in the heart of the city).
At least the Feds are not refusing to allow pets to be rescued like with Katrina.

We had wildfires here on the Central Oregon Coast in 2020. Churches of Christ Disaster Relief arrived promptly with a semi-truck loaded with everything that people could need: non-perishable food, cleaning and sanitary supplies, sheets, towels, baby items, brand new clothing, shoes and socks. They even provided shovels and wheelbarrows. They were on site for three months distributing to all in need. I was blessed to be part of the local volunteer group through the Church of Christ that I attend.This group truly does God’s work.

I’ve been sick with worry.
A bump to the top. I saw this one rated at Category 2 before landfall and sort of stopped paying attention. I can see how people might have gotten suckered by it. By the time you realize you’ve been had it’s too late to do much but ride it out. Prayers up for all involved.
