“Robbie” Stethem was born into a proud Navy family on November 17, 1961, in Waterbury, Connecticut. His father Richard served for 26 years and retired as Senior Chief Petty Officer. After retiring, he continued to work for the Navy as a civilian for another 20 years. Robert’s mother Patricia served in the Navy before leaving active duty to raise the family. Brother Kenneth served for 20 years and retired as a Navy SEAL. Brother Patrick, like Robert, was a “Seabee” diver and served for 10 years in the same Underwater Construction Team One.

The hijackers forced the flight to make multiple landings in Algiers, Algeria and in Beirut, Lebanon. They held 39 people hostage for 17 days, demanding the release of Lebanese and Palestinian prisoners held by Israel. Demanding to know which of the passengers were Jews, the hijackers gathered passports—looking for Jewish-sounding names.
With the passports, the terrorists identified the six Navy teammates as American military and singled out Stethem for brutal beatings. Threatening to kill all passengers unless their demands were met, one of the terrorists proved their point by shooting Robert Stethem in the head and dumping his body out onto the Beirut airport tarmac. He was 23 years old.

I was a young Marine aboard ship in the Med when this happened. We pulled out of our liberty port of Benidorm, Spain so fast we left a couple hundred people behind and went post-haste off the coast of Lebanon. We were told we would evacuate civilians but it never happened.

Yes, thanks. But they are not finished.I was living in Israel when they invaded Lebanon. Before Hezbollah. I was in Qyriat Shemona and noticed flatbed trucks as far as the eye could see on the hiway just east of town. Each trailer had 2 tanks on it. They assembled throughout the night and invaded the next day. It did not take them long to get to Beirut, which the circled the Palestinian refugee camps (UNRWA of course) of Sabra and Chatilla. The Lebanese soldiers went in the next day and slaughtered the Palestinians while the Israelis watch. Of course there was cry and hue and Israel was blamed for it. Hezbllah was formed out of those ashes. Mostly Hezbollah was not even Lebanese, but were Palestinians that were from Jordan during Black September in 1970. They were financed by Yassir Arafat until the Iranians were able to after the revolution in Iran. So, the reason I am giving this history lesson is that the Lebanese hated the camp refugees that formed Hezbollah. I bet that the Israelis could get the Lebanese to fight the remnants of Hezbollah and then help the Israelis to fight Iran. The Lebanese were dome of the best people I have ever known, and are not Arabs.
