A homeowner’s plan to make his home greener by switching to a heat pump and installing solar panels in 2023 took an unexpected turn when his then insurance company, CAA, nearly cancelled his policy over the upgrades – eventually pulling coverage entirely due to the solar panels.
A CBC News report cited Adam Szabo as saying: “I was confused, of course. I’m like, ‘What do you mean?’ It just doesn’t make sense, right?”
Szabo’s desire to boost his property’s value, reduce environmental impact, and lower energy costs was overshadowed by insurance complications he didn’t foresee.

How well do solar panels handle tennis ball sized hail?
I’ve wondered how those fare in a strong hail storm.

About as well as your roof and car. Normal hail is fine.
The real problem is the batteries for the solar power system and the possibility of them catching on fire and burning your house down.
But why don’t they simply exclude the solar panels from coverage. The article indicates they are cancelling the entire home coverage.

not if you use Edison or lead acid batteries
Maybe the sunlight reflects off the solar panels and low clouds and comes down to heat up the EV cars below and causes them to burst into flames much more often than average.

Interesting article. And given that it happened in Canada, perhaps the Boy Genius (Justin Trudeau) could force insurance companies to back off.
After all, government interference with private business always works.
Had a strong hailstorm here in 2011. It damaged just about every roof and just about all of those roofs had to be replaced. Replacing the solar panels would have added that much more cost to the roof replacements.

Untrue. The roofing company is the one that installed the panels in the first place. They will remove them and put them back afterwards. It’s not a free service but it can be done. You just have to know this before you hire a roofer.
Letting a bunch of shysters drive 1000 or so nails and screws into one’s roof isn’t going to end very well, unless it’s a barn or something.
I've wondered about that. We had tennis ball sized hail back in April 2021 that required nearly everyone in the neighborhood to have their roofs replaced.
One such neighbor real close to us had their roof replaced near the end of the year timeline, in early 2022. A few months ago, they added solar panels to their house. Not sure if part of the reason is they have a Tesla and a charging station in their garage.
I’ve tried having this conversation with others; not anymore.

Just as long Adam feels proud, money does not matter.
Not only does he get no more insurance, he also won’t be getting any measurable amount of power, given that he’s in Canada (not exactly the Mojave Desert) and he has a HUGE TREE right in front of the panels.
