Forbes Business Aerospace & Defense Russia May Have Stockpiled Its Best Missiles At An Arsenal In The Town Of Toropets. Which Is Why Ukraine Just Blew It Up With 100 Drones
Forbes ^ | September 18, 2024 | David Axe

In the pre-dawn hours on Tuesday, a large flock of Ukrainian drones winged north from Ukraine all the way to Toropets, a town in western Russian that hosts the 107th Arsenal, a sprawling ammunition dump feeding the Russian force fighting in Ukraine, 300 miles to the south.

The arsenal exploded with enough force to register as a small earthquake, draw the attention of NASA fire-spotting satellites and compel local authorities to order an evacuation of nearby residents. A lot of Russian munitions went up in flames.

(snip)

That so many of Russia’s best munitions were reportedly concentrated in a single location explains why Ukraine devoted such a large force to the attack. RBC-Ukraine claimed more than 100 drones were involved—potentially making the Toropets raid the biggest Ukrainian strike on a target inside Russia since Russia widened its war on Ukraine 30 months ago.

(snip)

In blowing up the Toropets arsenal, those homemade weapons may have struck their biggest blow yet—and saved potentially scores of Ukrainian lives by preventing future Russian attacks. “A very important result was achieved,” Ukrainian Pres. Volodymyr Zelensky said just hours after Toropets exploded.

But, but, but...I thought that Putin's "special military operation" was over. I've been told so repeatedly here over the past two years.

Here’s the thing: In a total war where one nation survives, the other is destroyed, Ukraine can’t defeat Russia. Russia is just too many times larger. But how in the world did Russia get itself into a situation where Russia is faced with its own destruction? How did that become the measure?

The way I see it, Russia in Ukraine lost two wars already. There was a war to save the whole of Ukraine from Russia. Russia lost that. Then there was a war to inflict such massive costs on Russia that even if she emerged with Donbas intact, she would never be so foolish as to try to invade another of her Western-facing neighbors. Can Russia really lose a war by Ukraine to reclaim Novorussia?

Russia attacked Finland in 1939. Finland survived.

Your premises do not necessarily hold.

100 drones with the ground speed of a WWI sailplane, maybe less, and how many got through to destroy a 4 mile wide arms depot? For hose countries watching, Russias air defense sucks. The 2nd major foot to drop is who has bought these air defenses and how long until they get dumped.

Not only will Russia lose this war, it will lose its military sales to other countries. The reason their military hardware is cheaper than Western nations is it sucks.

two things always strike me about these reports:

1. Russia is buying rockets and missiles from Iran and North Korea of all places. Why? Is russia’s industrial base so thread-bare that they’re forced to buy semi-sophisticated weaponry from third world countries?

2. Reports consistently show success of drones against russia, both strategic and tactical, which indicates that russia’s air defenses are totally pathetic ... even tiny israel fended off multiple-thousand, simultaneous drone attacks, destroying all but one or two, almost all before they even reached israel ...

Add to that - it appears that Russia doesn’t even follow the basics of ordnance storage.

Or we just can’t be bothered with those painfully annoying bunker farms, with earth mounds and blast doors.

They keep trying to do war-on-the-cheap and it doesn’t work well.

Ukraine can’t defeat Russia. Russia is just too many times larger.

Size matters?

Russia does have a much larger population. And it's got a lot more land.

But, the size of the fight is what matters most in a war. Russia thought that because they had the larger military that they could just walk in and declare victory. Almost 3 years after Putin's invasion, Ukraine stands, though hurting. Russia is still trying to do what seems to be impossible for them.

Stalemate!!!

In a war stalemate, the aggressor loses, because they will have lost a lot more than the victim. The victim lives another day and has to rebuild, but the aggressor did not win and will have to spend decades trying to recoup all they lost foolishly.

Finland doesn't exist anymore?

Russia stupidly 'lost' humongous amounts of territory to the U.S. Russia still exists.

The videos show drones expose a soft underbelly. Ground vehicles are extremely vulnerable to them, even if the air is dominated with traditional aircraft. Russia doesn’t seem to have much of a defense against them. A CHEAP drone can be launched by a single person in close proximity to bigger assets, e.g. tanks and people carriers, and leave a devastating impact.

This is the first mass-drone war.

Screengrab of the ammo dump blowing up ... some estimated the explosion size at about 1.6 kilotons of TNT, which would make it the size of a small atomic bomb

Damn, that Russian infrastructure blowed up real good!!

(Betcha Putin wasn't counting on scenes like this when he invaded Ukraine! lol)

It may well. But Russian air defense was designed to combat conventional aircraft. How well would our defense work against a 100 drone attack? How well could we defend against a nearby hostile nation-state, say for example Mexico or Canada using such methods?

Doesn’t the side that is winning (we’ve been told that every day by the media and by more than some here) usually occupy the other’s land as a greater percentage?

Russia has 20 percent of Ukraine’s land.

Ukraine has 1000 square miles out of 1.6 Million miles in Russia.

And the tide has been turning, we are told, for about 2 years.

Are you voting for Trump, Timber? Time you were forced to answer that question.
