After Microsoft laid off an internal team focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion, a team leader blasted the company for a lack of investment in these efforts.
"True systems-change work associated with DEI programs everywhere are no longer business critical or smart as they were in 2020," a leader of the team wrote in an email sent to thousands of employees, which was viewed by Business Insider.
The email states the team was eliminated due to "changing business needs" as of July 1. It's unclear how many employees were affected.
Many technology companies, including Microsoft, made commitments to improve diversity efforts after the 2020 murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer and the historic protests that followed.
In 2020, Microsoft pledged to double the number of Black and African-American leaders within the company by 2025. The company's progress on this pledge is also unclear.
Despite those commitments, many tech companies have appeared to retreat somewhat from diversity efforts. Zoom laid off a DEI-focused team earlier this year, Bloomberg reported. Google and Meta also cut DEI programs last year, according to CNBC.

Welcome to the business world. When it starts to hinder the bottom line, cuts are made.
Translation: Our DEI hires sucked at their jobs, so no mas.
I heard their current CTO is a camel and the server farms are run by penquins.
That’s not the problem though.
Amplified Translation: We couldn’t find enough DEI hires that were smart, hard-working, wanted to succeed, were good with their co-workers, and showed up on time. We tried, but our DEI hires sucked at their jobs, so no mas.
RE: blasting how DEI is ‘no longer business critical’
It never was. Microsoft became successful WITHOUT DEI.
Microsoft generally doesn’t sell products any more, they sell services. (Yes, they have a line of tablets and laptops, but those don’t make a significant impact on their total revenues. And the’ll sell you a software license if you really want it, but they’d prefer to sell you a recurring service.)
A profitable service is making a lot of computers obsolete as of next year. The hardware makers are willing to pay for that service.
This is good news, but I bet Intel has doubled down and offered them jobs.
It's supposed to work that way.
Let's see when the US military follows suit.
It is NOT a business. Its a scam and will increasingly be a liability as it violates Civil Rights laws.
DEI is not value adding in and of itself. It’s just a team of people snooping over cubicle walls checking melanin content, invading personnel files, checking pronouns and learning about workers sex partners to check for compliance to self imposed quotas. Diversity is fine if it adds value - anyone is welcome if they add value. If it’s just for virtue signaling, it will eventually have to answer to the bottom line.
Business critical = a waste of time and money on people who have not only been given everything free since birth but expect it to happen until they perish.
During the riots it was “business critical”. Now, not so much.

Ask me how I know.
In fairness, it's not just the estrogen. Plenty of DEI types were guys who were light in the loafers, and of course those of indeterminate or contradictory gender. So you have to also expel the fumes of the lavender cologne, hairspray, cranberry-apple scented body wash, and of course the baby powder. And that's just the (alleged) males....
Didn’t Earn It, is being exposed more and more. Fantastic!
Yea I am not sure Intel is going to survive its DIE experiment.
Sure glad I left.
