Republicans Will Regret a Second Trump Term
The New York Times ^ | July 13, 2024, 7:00 a.m. ET | Bret Stephens

Posted on 07/13/2024 6:12:25 AM PDT by E. Pluribus Unum

Now is the summer of Republican content.

The G.O.P. is confident and unified. Donald Trump has held a consistent and widening lead over President Biden in all the battleground states. Never Trumpers have been exiled, purged or converted. The Supreme Court has eased many of Trump’s legal travails while his felony convictions in New York seem to have inflicted only minimal political damage — if they didn’t actually help him.

Best of all for Republicans, a diminished Joe Biden seems determined to stay in the race, leading a dispirited and divided party that thinks of its presumptive nominee as one might think of a colonoscopy: an unpleasant reminder of age. Even if Biden can be cajoled into quitting, his likeliest replacement is Vice President Kamala Harris, whose 37 percent approval rating is just around that of her boss. Do Democrats really think they can run on her non-handling of the border crisis, her reputation for managerial incompetence or her verbal gaffes?

In short, Republicans have good reason to think they’ll be back in the White House next January. Only then will the regrets set in.

Three in particular: First, Trump won’t slay the left; instead, he will re-energize and radicalize it. Second, Trump will be a down-ballot loser, leading to divided and paralyzed government. Third, Trump’s second-term personnel won’t be like the ones in his first. Instead, he will appoint his Trumpiest people and pursue his Trumpiest instincts. The results won’t be ones old-school Republicans want or expect.

I think they're all Democrats now. Kristol, Dubya, etc.

And that's a very, very good thing.

You don't have to sell me, Bret. I'm already voting for him.

LOL. Sure, Republicans will be SO unhappy when Trump gets the economy booming and the border under control again within his first year back.

The only legit thing in the article is the reality that his win will radicalize the left even more, but the Dems losing their minds and all attachment to reality and rationality should actually help the Republicans to keep winning going forward.

*A wall is icing on that cake.*

It’s there to save us from ourselves. Think about it. Democrats want the votes and business wants the labor.

Analogy: The NFL salary cap keeps 32 owners from overbidding for labor.

Bret, a very slow on the uptake “journalist” whose opinion isn’t worth a cent.

9 seconds in you can see it look at the camera to be sure they are still filming before screaming. Scripted acting.

Regretting a Second Trump Term is an “only time will tell” thing.
Few things in life are dead certainties. Regretting a Second Biden Term is one of them.

Second, Trump will be a down-ballot loser, leading to divided and paralyzed government. Third, Trump’s second-term personnel won’t be like the ones in his first. Instead, he will appoint his Trumpiest people and pursue his Trumpiest instincts.

Number two is unknown at this time but definitely not the worse that could happen. And as to number three, let us all pray.

MAGA Dittoes. The MSM is wetting their pants these days as they realize Biden and/or Kamala wil be down ballot losers for democrats. Trump will increase our leads in Congress.

But it is true that Trump has been very guilty appointing and selecting Trumpy people. We must hope and pray he has learned from those mistakes.

In typical Republican fashion, I expect our side to overplay their hand and push hard on abortion and things like religion in school—two areas they should avoid. This is especially true in purple states

Your fears are allayed. Trump and the RNC are officially ignoring the most divisive issue facing our nation as they have removed their pro abortion policy from their platform.

Yes, but the Dems and the MSM were united in their efforts to cheat in 2020.

Now that Joe has been exposed as a senile old pants pooper - they are in open conflict with one another.

Cheating won’t work for them this time.

Trump is actually moving center on social issues.

True. So very True. His latest decision to ignore abortion on a federal level is proof of that.

Thank God this was not his policy during his term when he appointed 3 pro-life justice to the Supreme Court.

Why has Trump softened? I guess he expect libs and moderates will now vote for him? And that Evangelicals will stay in the pen like good sheep do?

The first reason democrats want the borders open (for the long term) is for votes - the second reason (the 'now' reason) is to fight inflation by reducing wages for Americans (with people willing to 'work under the table for lower wages). The third reason is for kickbacks from cartels (and via the Chinese)for the 'right' to sell American citizenship and control large illegal drug territories. The Chinese and Cartel work together with their illegal drug business)

As far as 'labor' for conservative businesses - that 's a lie. Trump was always against illegal immigration but he did support LEGAL immigration. As most of us do. You bought into a liberal meme/lie on that one Dirty. Hell would freeze over before Biden would help conservative businesses.

Democrats feel if they repeat a lie often enough people will believe it.

When democrats talk of their great concern for cheap labor - they talk about upscale restaurants needing cheap dishwashers etc to keep prices down in liberal 'elite' hangouts where meals starts at $200 a pop. And sorry, but if you're thinking 'farmers' -- the big agribusiness types that create most of our food are republican you're wrong. Those folks are democrats.

And how do we know Biden used open borders to deal with inflation and Trump didn't? Because Trump closed the border and Biden opened it. Again, It would be a cold day in hell before Biden would do something to help Republicans - and you know that Dirty Secret.

Also looking at Joe and Hunter's patterns and those of liberal 'elties' I'm betting the cartels are are paying off folks in DC for the 'right' to sell American citizenship. Which might be the true freakout reason for Democrats being scared to death of a Trump win.
