One of the best-known grocery chains in the Northeast announced it's closing an unspecified amount of stores.
Yet another business with ties to New York is closing multiple locations. The news follows what can only be described as a landslide of abrupt closings.
Retro Fitness in Yorkville ceased operations on May 22, a few days after Wheelock Rides out of Syracuse took its final bow. Not only that, Freihofer's bakery shut its doors for good after 140 years, including its Verona location.
And, just yesterday, BNY Mellon announced it's shuttering its Oriskany Business Park location.
These local closures come as national chains like Red Lobster and Applebees shut down several of their locations due to financial constraints.
The bad news keeps coming because now Stop & Shop, which has 100 stores in New York, will also scale down its portfolio.
The supermarket chain didn't reveal just how many stores will cease operations, but the chain did confirm the stores slated for closure have been earmarked for underperformance. A spokesman said the company wants to ensure a "stable and thriving future" by focusing on core markets.
No information was provided as to when these grocery stores will blink out of existence.

Hard to perform as a store when everyone's stealing from it and you're not allowed to do anything about it
This is an extension of the Bud Light movement. It's a side effect of the death of DEI - the whole WOKE evil is falling apart.
So my guess is these stores, like so many across the country are being closed in 'communities that have abused the privilege of having stores close by.
If businesses are treated as places to rob and burn down, the store will leave. And without guilt. WOKE guilt has died. It's over. Communities earn the right to have nice stores based on merit - on how the community treats the stores.
GOOD! Now build a wall around them so they won’t escape and pollute red states and the rest of the nation!
I think you’re right, I wonder if this is just the beginning of the economy really slowing down, consumer debt is off the charts, sooner or later that debt will eat into disposable income and the economy as a whole will crater.
So all those people who work in those stores are now unemployed.
NYC is now the Bad Apple.
Don’t mind the maggots.
YES, more will follow. It isn’t all Trump, it’s CRIMINALS AND ILLEGALS STEALING. PLUS GREEN REGS.
Trump will inherit a really bad situation with the economy, sort of like Reagan did, during his era the economy got worse before it really took off after his tax cuts took effect
Stores can’t afford the luxury of white guilt - of keeping stores open in high crime, high theft areas. So, they’ll close them. WOKE quilt is a thing of the past. Trump will bring crime down in these neighborhoods - and then the stores will come back.
Interesting... when I lived in Boston, Stop and Shop was the really run down second rate grocery store — while its competitor Star Market was always clean, well staffed and had quality products.
Victory Market was the best, though. Don’t think it even exists anymore.
Kind of like down here in Florida — Winn Dixie is the run down place, Publix is the quality grocery store.
Marty the Robot. Interesting.
Thanks for that excellent article

I believe Obama (and now Biden) with their marxist controllers are attempting to bring the Curley Effect to the entire United States
Flee New York like your life depends on it.
Because it does.
This is bad management by Stop & Shop - Wegmans is killing them. Stop & Shop was also one of the more insane stores during Covid - they had security guards at their entrance screaming at people to “pull your mask up!” People did not forget the treatment of customers by Stop & Shop.
They “revamped” the two Stop N Shop stores in our area in recent years, making them look less like a traditional super market but not quite like a Costco - somewhere inbetween. The half-in half-out style is not pleasing and I’ve pretting much quit shopping there, as we do have alternatives here.
Perfect!
When CVS closed outlets in black(er) parts of Boston, Elizabeth Warren mounted her high horse and accused them of “redlining”. Rhode Island based CVS just doesn’t want to lose money.
“If businesses are treated as places to rob and burn down, the store will leave. And without guilt. WOKE guilt has died. It’s over. Communities earn the right to have nice stores based on merit - on how the community treats the stores.”
I wish that were true. Here in the blue part of Ohio, woke is the dominant religion.
It doesn’t say how many locations are closing, or even how many of the closing stores are in New York.
Stop & Shop is headquartered in Massachusetts. It dominates in Connecticut as well. Only 25% of the stores are in NY, and I don’t think any are in the boroughs, as they have been full sized for decades.
Grocery store chains come and go in the northeast. They grow, shrink, change names, merge, go out of business.
I have seen over the years First National/Finast, Waldbaums, Shop Rite, Big Y, Shaws, Edward’s, Big Buy, Heartland/Purity Supreme, Everybody’s . . .
They all go through changes. Walmart and Aldi are probably immune because they are differeny models, but standard full-sized supermarkets? Ebb and flow.
