Randi Weingarten's American Federation of Teachers defends pro-Hamas campus occupations as 'peacefully demonstrating' The American Federation of Teachers led by Randi Weingarten claimed that anti-Israel protesters on college campuses were simply "peacefully demonstrating."
The American Federation of Teachers led by Randi Weingarten claimed that anti-Israel protesters on college campuses were simply “peacefully demonstrating.”
The Tuesday statement from the AFT came in response to a hearing last week from the House Education and the Workforce Committee where leaders of Northwestern University, Rutgers University, and the University of California, Los Angeles, were grilled regarding their response to campus anti-Israel encampments.
”AFT members and leaders acknowledged the threat of antisemitism as well as Islamophobia but held strong to support for students—and faculty and staff who have joined them—who are peacefully demonstrating,” the AFT wrote in the press release.
Weingarten wrote that “We have to be able to be against hate and against violence … and stand up for academic freedom and free expression.”
However, May’s anti-Israel occupations, some of which are still ongoing, have largely not been peaceful.
At Columbia University, students broke into a campus building and vandalized it. A university spokesperson said that the anti-Israel protesters broke doors, windows, and blockaded entry into the building.
Anti-Israel protesters at California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt caused over $1 million in costs, including damage, to the institution after they took over a portion of campus and several buildings.
At the UCLA anti-Israel encampment, which the AFT described as a “peaceful protest,” Jewish students were blocked by activists from using certain portions of campus to get to class.
Mia McIver, president of the California Federation of Teachers Universities Council, wrote that the hearings “were a shameful farce...They are fruit of a decadeslong attack on higher ed.”
Here we go with the “mostly peaceful” BS again.
Self loathing. Embrace the suck ‘randee’. How much does she pull in again?
And why has the teachers profession gone so low in public approval
Let her go to Gaza and see just how much the enemy loves her.
She’s a gross embarrassment to the AFT union, which has NO business AT ALL supporting international terrorism or for that matter any anti-American gangsters anywhere (and especially NOT ON CAMPUS, for Heaven’s sakes how utterly disconnected and insane can a person be?)
That union needs a cleanout job!
Self hating jews are alive and well!
She has mental illness
This lesbian needs to move to Gaza. She is Hillary’s curse on American.
Randi has burned too many brain cells.
“Your speech is violence, our violence is speech.”
Don’t know if teachers are required to pay union dues. If so they can demand the union only withhold the portion of their dues necessary to perform its duties as a collective bargaining representative and not for political activism. (Communications Workers of America v. Beck ) When I worked in the USPS the union was exempt from this law because membership is optional. If you join the union it’s all or nothing. So I chose nothing
at many or most schools, union membership is mandatory as either a condition of employment (excepting right to work states)
or as a practical expedient just to survive there
and yes, a union member CAN ask that the political portion of their dues not be charged
HOWEVER,
1. unions designate just how much of the dues are political. I have known a couple unions who designated a ridiculously Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny amount as qualified for Non-Assessment. Like maybe $2 a month when the dues are over $100-$150
there is no effective recourse from this cheating.
a person could sue the union, but that’s not practical for most folks just trying to survive on a wage
AND...
send in a request like that to your union and it is a DEAD RINGER that your union identifies you... you can kiss off any genuine Duty of Representation in case you need any help keeping your job.
Long-time public school teacher here. And I was an involuntary member of the American Federation of Teachers. It’s worth noting that I never once had the opportunity to vote for my state or national leaders.
Weingarten and her ilk are all chosen by shadowy delegates at conventions. It’s just like how Stalin and his ilk were selected.
Yet Weingarten preaches democracy. It’s a good thing! Except for her.
How many people even bother to vote in school board elections?
In my district there is ONE voting location, on the high school campus so ALL the teachers can vote. The turnout in the community percentages are typically quite small 10-15% range. Funny, never heard a push for early voting or absentee ballots or MAIL OUT ballots for school votes.
That’s the attitude why we have such whacked-out schoolboards. Many such SB elections are held in off years (or worse!). This is so low turnout is guaranteed. Thus, allowing unionized teacher turnout to get the desired union candidates to get elected.
It’s how the Weather Underground types started taking over education in the 1970s.
You think they went away just because they stopped shooting cops and bombing buildings?
> Don’t know if teachers are required to pay union dues. <
At one time it was mandatory in closed shop states. You either paid union dues or you paid your “fair share”, which wasn’t much less than the actual dues. I worked in one of those states.
Then about five years ago the Supreme Court ruled that union membership was optional in government organizations.
Unions are corrupt. Nevertheless, I told my teacher friends to be careful about leaving. A teacher with no union membership was an easy target for a vindictive administrator. And I do know good teachers who left the union, and soon after got fired.
In that regard, the whole system stinks.
From a dyke, self-hating jew-ish UNION leader. A Bolshevik. In bed with Islamofascists. Pushed the Covid vax and NOT teaching children— boxing them up. Destroying young children. What a hateful biotch this thing is. Be gone, Demonette!
