Russia's economy is so driven by the war in Ukraine that it cannot afford to either win or lose, economist says
Business Insider / msn.com ^ | April 21, 2024 | Jennifer Sor

"Military pay, ammunition, tanks, planes, and compensation for dead and wounded soldiers, all contribute to the GDP figures. Put simply, the war against Ukraine is now the main driver of Russia's economic growth" Foucart said...

Other areas of Russia's economy are hurting as the war drags on. Moscow is slammed with a severe labor shortage, thanks to young professionals fleeing the country or being pulled into the conflict. The nation is now short around 5 million workers, according to one estimate, which is causing wages to soar.

Inflation is high at 7.4% — nearly double the 4% target of its central bank. Meanwhile, direct investment in the country has collapsed, falling around $8.7 billion in the first three quarters of 2023, per data from Russia's central bank.

That all puts the Kremlin in a tough position, no matter the outcome of the war in Ukraine. Even if Russia wins, the nation can't afford to rebuild and secure Ukraine, due to the financial costs as well as the impact of remaining isolated from the rest of the global market.

Western nations have shunned trade with Russia since it invaded Ukraine in 2022, which economists have said could severely crimp Russia's long-term economic growth.

"A protracted stalemate might be the only solution for Russia to avoid total economic collapse," Foucart wrote. "The Russian regime has no incentive to end the war and deal with that kind of economic reality. So it cannot afford to win the war, nor can it afford to lose it. Its economy is now entirely geared towards continuing a long and ever deadlier conflict."

Other economists have warned of trouble coming for Russia amid the toll of its war in Ukraine. Russia's economy will see significantly more degradation ahead, one London-based think tank recently warned ...

Russia had a good thing going before Feb. 2022

It was the leading supplier of oil & gas to Europe, with lots of hard-currency Euros flowing in ... that's all gone now, and ain't coming back

Plus, the costs of rebuilding destroyed Russsian refineries, factories, power plants, and the Black Sea Flotilla

What a giant mistake for Russia Putin's invasion was!

One thing for sure. Regardless of who wins there, with the amount of money we have dumped into that war, our debtor nation has already lost and we will have nothing to show for it. This is money Biden could have out to better use to globally pay off everyone’s student loans. That theatre arts major in Somalia will thank him.

In Putin's defense:

Ukraine looked like a pushover. His compliant intelligence sources told him it was.

The U.S. President Biden showed himself to be weak and incompetent. He appeared to give Putin the go-ahead, with his famous "as long as Russia doesn't take too much" line.

NATO and the USA had done nothing as he gradually grabbed more of the former USSR back into Russian control.

It all went spiraling into the toilet when the Ukrainians refuse to follow the program, fought back with everything at their disposal, and halted the Russian blitzkrieg.

The West, startled by what it saw, felt compelled to support Ukraine, for their own defense.

Here we are, in a quagmire.

A small fraction of the insanity of Green Spending on Democratic party political allies.

Cloward Piven. The strategy to bankrupt the USA so as to bring about the revolution.

“Put simply, the war against Ukraine is now the main driver of Russia’s economic growth”

Which just goes to show that whatever measure of economic growth they are using is BS.

The ‘West’ had been supporting UKR since at least 2010.
Obama gave them blankets.
Trump gave the TOWs.

It’s STILL the leading supplier of oil and gas to Europe. They just blend it offshore with 5% oil or gas from another country and call it non-Russian energy and pay twice the price.

as the War on the Ground is not going well in YouCrayne.
It’s all just noise, a distraction for what’s going on in YouCrayne
on the ground.

Putin mistakenly believed he had a competent military

Shortsighted thinking by Putin.

Even if a military seems strong at any moment in time, no military can fight long term and win, without a strong economy to back it up. Putin is not a thinker and used a brain that only thought about the past history of a USSR that was no more, but he wanted to reconstitute it.

Stupid is as stupid does. Putin is as dumb a leader and every decision he's made demonstrates that clearly.
