Signs Point To Combat Debut Of Navy’s SM-3 Interceptor Against Iranian Ballistic Missiles
The Warzone ^

Posted on 04/14/2024 2:58:10 PM PDT by USA-FRANCE

Apair of U.S. Navy Arleigh Burke class destroyers in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea were reportedly among the assets employed to shoot down Iranian missiles and drones headed toward Israel last night. There are strong signs these ships may have fired Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) anti-missile interceptors in the course of those operations, which would mark the first use of those weapons against real incoming threats.

Those missiles cost far more than the cheap drones they shot down. If we even have a hope of standing up for Taiwan, we need to build bunches of them and not use them up.

Well it could have been worst cost wise. SM-3 Block IB are 12k each, Block IIA are 37k ea.

Back in the 1980s the liberal creeps mocked Ronald Reagan. Reagan knew back then that American ingenuity would eventually be able to defend against missiles and ICBMs. The libs said that “hitting a bullet with another bullet” was a pipe dream. They dubbed it Star Wars, unobtainable.

Well, American ingenuity combined with Israeli ingenuity, just intercepted at least 300 missiles and drones from Iran. None of them breached Israeli airspace. Even Jordan helped Israel.

Israel calls the different anti-missle systems Iron Dome (Patriot) , David’s Sling, and Arrow.

Ronald Reagan is smiling down on us.

“Those missiles cost far more than the cheap drones they shot down.”

Yes, but they cost a LOT less than the damage and loss of life a drone hit would do.

If they worked, I’m glad they worked.

Does the article say they actually interrcepted?

Isn’t Iron Dome a native, home-grown Israeli solution?

Yep the LORD used him to defeat the USSR and, allow Soviet Jews to go to Israel, and he is still using Reagan, while Reagan is with him.

It’s past time to examine how much total aid goes to Israel in all programs and services and how much they pay from their own economic activity.

SM-3s are the shipboard part of the missile defense system - remember when they tested it (and the upgraded Aegis system) against a dead intel satellite? I suspect they used it against Iran's ballistic missiles, not drones.

Yeah, and they also cost a lot more than the lives that could have been lost if those Iranian missiles had been allowed to reach their targets.

At a cost of how much each and a produciton rate of how many per month? Who makes them and what congresspeople and spinators are in their pockets?

Ballistic missiles, not drones. Interception altitude is above the atmosphere. I dont think SM3 handles drones.

Raytheon, and rocket motors from Aerojet.
35-40 years ago I was a consultant for both (metrology).

Combat experience is invaluable btw. Getting to shoot these things “for real” is worth a lot for R&D.

Iron Dome is a native Israeli system, as is Arrow (equivalent to THAAD) and Davids Sling, which is replacing Patriot PAC-2.

All of these however were developed with R&D participation and component sourcing from US companies like Boeing and Raytheon. This is a win-win for both countries as they share R&D benefits.

I seriously doubt those numbers. Maybe that much to repaint and change the markings but not that. Do you have a link for that?

“”Yep, the LORD used him to defeat the USSR and, allow Soviet Jews to go to Israel””

When we were very young, I remember hearing about Jews being ‘allowed’ to leave the USSR, every 5 years or so. I remember thinking how strange that they could not leave otherwise. By the time Ronaldus Magnus became our Governor of California, I began to understand.

Reagan kept mentioning many names of people in the USSR, to keep them in the news, keep the pressure on the USSR to not just kill them outright.
