Pro-life conservatives are 'disappointed' in Trump's new abortion policy, but stick by him: 'only one option'

Conservative groups backing former president Donald Trump in his re-election bid say they are "deeply disappointed" with his official position on abortion unveiled Monday, but it won't deter their support in November.

The former president and presumptive GOP nominee in a video posted on Truth Social Monday morning said he cemented his position on the controversial issue, saying that abortion access should be a states’ issue and didn’t endorse a national, federal limitation – like a 15-week ban.

Pro-life interest groups who have endorsed Trump expressed disappointment at his announcement, but it appears unlikely to sway their support in consideration of Trump’s overall stance compared to Biden’s extreme abortion policy.

"The reality of a stark choice between President Biden who supports abortion: any number, any reason, up until birth, all paid for by the taxpayer and President Trump: who gave us three Constitutionalist justices, 220 lower court judges, appointees who support life and the overturn of Roe v. Wade has my endorsement and support in November for President," said Penny Nance, CEO of Concerned Women for America (CWA), who said she "favors federal limits on abortion."

This is exactly what his position should be. If the right is going to be consistent, they need to stick to the original states rights issues and the extraconstitutional issues of the flawed Roe V Wade case that conservatives have been debating for years. The best case against Roe is that it divined a nonexistent constitutional right via a contorted/distorted reading of the constitution. The moral issues should be taken up amongst citizens of individual states. That’s what we all purportedly love about our concise , Federally-limiting constitution , folks. Sure New York and California are gonna do what they do, but that’s all the more reason for people to abandon those states and strengthen our strongholds in the rest of the country.

What are you talking about? For decades we fought to get abortion returned to the states where we have a chance to get the best we can pass and then work on the morality. You are not going to change California or New York overnight but you can make huge inroads on a state by state basis.

The Democrats won the 2022 election on abortion right after Roe v Wade made abortion a matter for the states, not the Federal government. They lied then and will lie in 2024.

Trump’s announcement is strategic in that he said it’s still a state matter, not a federal right. If you are 100% as to no abortion under all circumstances, the Democrats win again.

Uh, with all due respect, who cares what they think.

Conservatives like Mark Levin said Trump’s statement was SUPERB!

“if you’re pro-life, fight for the most pro-life policy in your state.

Trump’s has enough national fights on his plate. Can’t ask him to fight every battle. He did his part by returning the fight to the states.”

Bears repeating

Again? I’ve never heard of the country having a national ban.

We do seem have a dearth of historical knowledge. The first country in the modern age that legalized abortion, in 1920, was the Soviet Union. Would it be a strong argument now to fight against legalized abortion to point out that making abortion legal is in mimicry of this (hopefully still regarded as) abominable evil empire?

Trump killed Roe v. Wade. Pro-lifers will forever be grateful to him for that.

He said he was going to do it and it got done.

Let it be up to the states to decide this. That was the driving force behind overturning Roe vs Wade.

Thanks to Trump, this should be a non-issue for all conservative presidential candidates going forward as all they have to do is say "it's up to the states."

Trump handled this situation very well. He will still get the votes from the pro-life crowd (of which I am one) while not unduly angering potential voters who literally live and breathe for abortions.

I’m afraid you’re right. Trump has always been very weak on the life issue.

Trump was the only person I can remember that vehemently attacked Hillary during the debates with the strongest language I can remember in a debate regarding partial birth abortion.

My first reaction was his Spiritual advisors failed him or he didn’t listen to them. At any rate could be a nail to America’s coffin. God will not be mocked.

Why does that translate to the need for a national abortion ban, which the overturn of Roe was not predicated on?

Good position politically, this is an issue that would bring democrats to vote like no other if Trump supported a national ban. Trump is getting better advice this time around.

Let me ask you this:

Do you think if he said he wants states to ban abortion that would help or hurt his reelection chances?

Do you think if he said he wants states to ban abortion that would help or hurt the chances of states doing that?

Totally disagree.

Both Charlie Kirk and Larry Schweikart are reporting that pro-life leaders are perfectly fine with this position.

My wife is as pro-life as one can be, and she has no problem with it.

This statement also puts the rabidly pro-abort groups in a corner; they can't use this issue to easily rile their crazy pro-death white lady blocs of voters.

Win/win.

It’s a state issue. As much as I abhor abortion, it is not a federal issue but instead is something that should be dealt by the states. SCOTUS ruled correctly when they made that ruling.

The Supreme court ruled it to be a state choice so any federal laws would be unconstitutional anyway.

SCOTUS said that Roe V Wade arrogated the authority of states, and thus vacated it. That doesn't stop congress from passing a law that places federal restrictions on abortions. The question is whether SCOTUS would consider such a law in violation of the 10th Amendment. Their record in that area is sketchy. Maybe congress could do as they did with the "National Drinking Age", and withhold a significant amount of Medicaid funding from states that allow abortions beyond a certain gestation.

But for the foreseeable future, it's a losing issue. Women want their abortions and they will vote to keep them.

Reagan? He got nothing, despite what he wanted. How many babies were massacred from the 80s to today? What did it matter what he was for? He accomplished NOTHING on the issue of life, Roe memained in Full effect. Trumps actions will save millions.

If you want it abolished get off your dead backside and get out there and work in YOUR state.
