According to New York state law, squatters are “classified as tenants and receive temporary rights as such” after occupying a property for 30 days.
New York State law dictates that if an owner wants to reclaim property from a squatter after 30 days, they must prove a right to the property and proceed with legal eviction proceedings.
The Landas are taking Flores to landlord-tenant court to evict him. But it’s been a long process. ABC 7 reported that the couple already had five hearings in civil court but the process has been repeatedly delayed.

The ridiculous phrase “squatters rights” should be applied only to people putting their mark on SF sidewalks.
This is totally out of control. If I was a neighbor I would make life miserable for these squatters.
The owner of said property must show a right to the property. I’m so glad I moved away from NY and CT 50 years ago.
I’ve thought about renting out my home while I do some traveling but because I live in NYS it’s become to risky.
When Judges and Lawyers become victims of these Thefts of Personal Property, it will end, not until.
Time for Americans to start putting the Second Amendment to work doing what it was written to do. Squatters try to grab my house they better pack a big lunch and bring caskets they’ll fit in.
Veep
“...I live in NYS it’s become to risky...”
It’s another way to rob people of wealth and investing in real estate. It has nothing to do with squatters and everything to do with keeping you (us) from making sound investments that will make us money.
It’s the goal, Ben. Everyone needs to realize that. America is bad and has to be destroyed so the “good” people can remake it into their utopia.
an owner having to PROVE ownership? how about a name on the TAX BILL! in the old day you only had to “know a guy”. a cottage industry is awaiting...”Saul’s squatter removal service” has a certain ring to it. bottom line though folks...this is what the majority of voters wanted so either get involved or deal with it. remember friends...”elections have consequences then everyone suffers the consequences”. Smokey bear says “Only YOU can prevent democrats”.

Relatives in the Midwest and Southwest see and hear about Squatters Rights on a regular basis.
Depending on the county/city Squatters Rights can happen in a week in parts of California.
I have a squatter. 10 years of no rent from that apartment... and they say rents are too expensive in NYC.
My lawyer says, after 30 days they are no longer considered squatters. I was too furious to listen to what they were called after 30 days.
Seems house sitting might be a profitable business venture there.
Unreal. 😡

“America will be ‘destroyed from within’ if law-abiding citizens aren’t protected”
That’s the intent.......what do you think “build back better” means? 🤷
The absolute cornerstone of civilized society is property rights. All else stems from the ability to own solid assets. You might argue freedom of speech or gun rights, and they’re related, but not the block holding the whole wall.
Yesterday I bought five hundred feet of copper wire at Lowes. It was locked up and the clerk carried it to the cash register and waited while I paid for it. When I asked why he said that people would just walk in and walk out with it. They’re doing that all the time with almost everything. When I started working my first job in 1971 was in a store. Even though it was a bad neighborhood the amount of theft was pretty low. Right now, I think all the stores in that area have shut down due to theft. Our government is no longer protecting property rights because, it turns out that owning property is just white privilege. We know where this philosophy leads by looking at Detroit and any Democratic stronghold. Yet, here we are, allowing our entire civilization to hit the dumpster because of “racism.”
