California Demolished Dam to Save Salmon, Killed the Salmon Instead

California, which is in a state of perpetually self-inflicted drought, restricts all sorts of practical water solutions based they would hurt some living creature somewhere. (People, especially farmers, don’t count.) And along the way the state decided to demolish a dam to help some salmon.

The destruction was celebrated by environmentalists and rubber-stamped by the media.

Native American tribes, environmentalists and state officials have been big advocates for this dam removal. Governor Gavin Newsom announced “California’s Salmon Strategy for a Hotter, Drier Future” in hopes of restoring salmon populations in the state. The governor lists his six priorities: removing barriers and modernizing infrastructure for salmon migration, restoring habitat, protecting water flows, modernizing hatcheries, transforming technology and strengthening partnerships.

Tribal leaders, environmentalists, and state officials are the only people who count in California.

$500 million was spent to make California a worse place. For human beings. And for salmon too.

Hundreds of thousands of young salmon are believed to have died this week at the site of a historic dam removal project on the Klamath River, after an effort to restore salmon runs on the newly unconstrained river went awry, the Chronicle has learned.

The dead chinook salmon were among the first hatchery fish released on the Klamath since four hydroelectric dams were breached near the California-Oregon border, to allow the river to flow freely again and ultimately help fish flourish.

Kill the fish, help the fish, who can tell the difference.

I believe it released pent up sludge, some toxic to varying levels, and coated the gravel spawning beds that salmon are drawn to on their runs. Confused by missing gravel spawning river beds, and over warmed by black sludge attracting excess sun warmth to the water, they died instead. I think the sludge also killed off food in the
River that the salmon might normally have counted on for sustainable during runs upstream.

A lot of heavy metals settled into the sediment behind the dam. So, when they opened it up, all of that sediment, with the high concentration of heavy metals, flushed downstream and killed all of the fish.

IOW, the Can't-Do People.

Downright un-American.

Those who can, do. Those who can't, scold.

Silty water
Salmon don’t run in streams from glacier outflow in Alaska for the same reason. Clogs their gills and suffocates them

As a matter of possible interest, biological science and engineering have worked together to solve the problem of salmon needing to get up stream.

I very recently had the opportunity to visit a small but technologically leading company in southwest Virginia. They make very special screens that are used in the production of a "Fish Crowder" that is used in association with a screen allowing river water flow upstream. The Crowder is constructed in association with a dam restricting normal upstream travel.

The fish crowder at intervals constricts a chamber into which the salmon have been herded and then compresses that chamber volume and the fish within. At the proper closing point, the crowder then lifts the crowded fish and river water vertically to the resivoir level where the fish are released. That is the fish are herded, trapped, lifted and then released.

Breeding migration solved.

I know what you mean brother. I’ve been swimming upstream for 83 years but keep doing triple gainers backwards just before reaching the top. Start all over again. It’s exhausting.

(It’s exhausting.)

Indeed it is.

And just when I might get to breathe easy for a moment, some fool comes out of nowhere to make trouble.

self-inflicted drought,

Lost interest in reading this after that absurd comment.

Take out dams. Dump huge amount of fresh water into the ocean without using it.

Sounds like a self-inflicted drought to me.

Listening to a conversation today of a long time cal resident who relocated stating the state is in the dumpster, those programs to help with forest fires, water conservation, electric grid and other essentials that the state has to provide to its general public is non existent. The rats have destroyed a beautiful productive state

The young Chinook (King) salmon spend their early life behind the Dam before going down stream through the ladders. Release the dam’s water and the water’s turbulence and mud killed them all.

They will have to start over planting Chinook fry and waiting 4-5 years to see what returns - on the way out: past the gulls and other birds; on the way back: past various fisheries, the seals & sea lions.

They release several million fry and maybe get back a dozen or two spawners.
