It’s official: After dipping their toes into the working world and spending a handful of years on the job, Gen Zers are already over the traditional nine-to-five grind.
You may remember that TikTok video of a young woman crying over her “crazy” nine-to-five schedule—described as “Gen Z girl finds out what a real job is like”—which went viral last year.

As long as they’re self-supporting, it’s up to them what jobs they take with what hours.
I have a friend who worked in restaurants for years, everything from waitress to manager, and finally, she took an office job with M-F/9-5 hours and holidays off. She made less money, but she was thrilled with it.
If the country is going bankrupt. Is it smart to work when it’s all going to be taken away. I’d hate to be young today.
Not happy about this, but it isn’t any more moronic than poor to mid class boomers arguing for tax cuts for wealthy people and deregulation of business because “someday I or my children can be rich.” Both views are delusional.
Their choices aren’t what’s insufferable, it’s their incessant whining about it.
I think those Tik-Toks are just theater.
As long as they can support themselves I don’t care what they do. You can’t really expect Americans to have the WASP work ethic when most Zoomers aren’t White, Anglo Saxon or Protestants (or even Christian in general).
I mean no offense to other ethnic groups , I know they work hard too (and I’m not even a WASP anyways).
I agree with that.
And for young men and women with ambition and a solid work ethic the job and career opportunities are the best I have seen in my lifetime (74 years).
“As long as they’re self-supporting, it’s up to them what jobs they take with what hours.”
Exactly. As long as they are contributing to society and being productive, it’s all good.
But we do have more than enough rabble rousing “community organizers,” social justice warriors, race baiters, DEI VPs, government “workers,” climate “scientists,” and “environmental engineers.” They are a huge DRAG on society costing us untold amounts of money.
There are plenty of things NOT to like about the “corporate 9-to-5 world,” but I wonder if these young people have any of these in mind when they complain about it.
I’m almost suspecting the path is in the insane social media publishing realm, where people post videos and strike a nerve of those willing to give them a million “subscribes.” The McFarland Family makes hundreds of thousands of dollars a year like this, and they only got started a few years ago during the “scamdemic.” To their credit, the dad still works a full-time (?) job as a manager in a high-tech robotics industry. But the 3 adult sons are living a dream. How tenuous the dream is yet to be realized.
I agree. There are a lot of people whose job is to make life more difficult and expensive for other people.
tax cuts for wealthy people? Explain....
Lottery players.
Have fun working till you’re 80 years old
The workday is well underway by 9. People do seem to stop around 5, but they start well before 9. I have never had a job that started at 9. 8:30 is the latest. Self-employed people never start or stop. It’s all the same day, man.
I’d never heard of the McFarlands, but they seem harmless enough, sort of like the people who monetized “Grumpy Cat.”
Like any kind of career as a performer, I assume there are millions trying compared to the handful who make a lot of money.
From what I’ve seen, these are the same young people who complain about working more than 5 hours in a day, 5 days a week.
They want to be France.
