U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin warned on Thursday that NATO will be drawn into war if Ukraine is defeated by invading Russian forces.
Speaking at a Republican-led House Armed Services Committee hearing to discuss his recent absence while hospitalized for complications from prostate cancer surgery, Austin predicted that Russian President Vladimir Putin would not "stop" if Moscow wins the war in Ukraine. Austin made the remarks after being asked about Congress failing to approve a $60 billion military aid package for Ukraine, as requested by President Joe Biden. Despite significant bipartisan support for Ukraine aid, the measure has stalled amid a series of partisan disputes over border security and other issues.
"We know that if Putin is successful here, he will not stop," Austin said. "He will continue to take more aggressive action in the region. And other leaders around the world, other autocrats, will look at this and they'll be encouraged by the fact that this happened and we failed to support a democracy."

I saw that.
And just how will "NATO" be drawn into war?
That “10%” was, at minimum, 600,000 new Russian recruits ago. By the way, those troops have never been committed. They have been being trained and prepared for NATO’s main event. The coming main event that moron, Austin, just proclaimed to the world.
The German military could take lessons from the Ukrainians and the German commandos could take lessons from the Peruvians. The Germans botched their Olympic hostage crises. The Peruvians really handled the Japanese Embassy hostage crises beautifully.
Back in the first Cold War, we YAFers had buttons that said, “Just say Nyet to Soviet nuclear blackmail.” And Reagan did it. Now Putin has very purposely brought about the 2nd Cold War, Stalin nostalgia, and a Neo-Soviet criminal State.
How about if you ask your Ruzzian friends to stop invading other people’s countries?
To avoid potential future war with Russia we must go to war with Russia now!
Makes sense.
“Wnat, if anything, is worth “our blood”?
Where should we draw the line, and whose blood are you referring to by “our blood”? “
Certainly not refighting Eastern Front WWII battles with us taking the German WWII side, and allied with the modern followers of Hitler. That is a starting place.
A better answer is looking at our founders. Not a single one supported this, nor the permanent “alliances” that have created this disaster. They did not go abroad seeking dragons to slay. Jefferson went after the Barbary pirates when they would not stop attacking us.
I would turn the question back to you. Can you point to any current conflict zone in the world that DC says is NOT worth our blood and treasure.
By escalating further. By continually having NATO troops firing NATO missiles into RUSSIAN cities, killing Russian civilians as they sleep in their beds. By sending more but deadlier weapons for these troops to use on Russian civilians. By having stone cold idiots like that moron, Austin, tell them NATO WILL attack when the Ukes finally admit the obvious and are about to capitulate. Do you really think Putin is stupid enough to idly sit by and wait for the promised NATO first strike? It might be political clap trap to the warmongers in DC but it is deadly serious business to Russia. Putin is not bluffing. Our idiot leaders think they are only playing corrupt American politics here. The Russians are not. Again, Putin does not bluff.
Wow you are totally clueless.
And I might be drawn into the hospital, but I won’t tell anyone.
So, if Russia loses, they will counter with an attack on NATO—after depleting their armies and equipment?
I would be interested in hearing where that has happened, anywhere, anytime in history. It makes no sense.
The point is that Russia had no world domination plans, no invade NATO plans. That is why their Army was 10% of the size it was during Reagan’s term.
Thank you DesertRhino for not answering the question.
I personally defended us from your friends back before the collapse of the Soviet Union. My son defended us in his day. My father in his. We in my family have always been on our side, since my family arrived in this country.
As to where we have a moral obligation, it is with our country and with our NATO allies.
We also have what we call major non-NATO allies.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_non-NATO_ally
There is and has been discussion of including Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine in the list of major non-NATO allies.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_non-NATO_ally#Ukraine,_Georgia,_and_Moldova
But, importantly, this has not yet happened. Besides, it’s not clear what the category of major non-NATO ally involves. Are these mutual defense alliances, or are they one-way things?
I like mutual defense. I don’t like one-way things.
The question of whether it is worth our blood SHOULD BE addressed in three ways: (1) commitment to mutual defense, (2) commitment to democratic values, and (3) pragmatic considerations such as can the place be defended given its location.
As it is, while I have my opinions regarding specifics, I rely on our elected officials. For example, in 1956, our president decided NOT to come to Hungary’s defense when that country was invaded by Russia.
So, I appreciate the reluctance of some on this site who caution against coming to the aid of countries outside our defense perimeter. We have, for example, “aided” Arabs in Iraq and Afghanis who were not willing to defend themselves. This foolishness questions the ability of our government to make responsible decisions. We should be much more hard-headed than we have been.
Thanks for bringing up Jefferson. Yes, Jefferson - whose policy was “peace and free trade with all countries” - kicked ass twice against the Barbary Coast States, and that was very early in our history. There are times you just have to do that. Although, with missiles and nuclear missiles, we have to be very careful these days.
“ Here’s the problem: aggressors are NOT appeased.”
You are correct…that’s what the problem is with the worst aggressor on the planet…which is the United States.
They reached out to join NATO. There has been nothing but peaceful outreach to the West since 1992. The West rebuffed them at every turn. To the idiots in Brussels and DC communist Soviet Union never fell. We rehabilitate the Nazis and Japanese warlords but modern Christian Russia remains the pariah of the world. It is an unbelievable state of affairs. Making it worse is the fact that when the neocons originally responsible began to wane they were reinforced by the 21st century globohomos. Now we have a rejuvenated neocon/globohomo pact from hell running the West.
Venezuela is prime real estate, with the world's largest proven petroleum reserves, huge coal reserves, 10,000 tons of gold reserves, coffee, chocolate, world-class beaches, as well has some of the world's most beautiful Latinas. Fly the bottom 80% to Newsom's socialist paradise, then open a Social Security/Medicare refund office in Caracas. Venezuelans want to move to stolen-election Demonrat-run socialist Amerika? It's all theirs.
I knew 3 Venezuelan chicks when I was at UF.
All 3 were “white Hispanic” and studying ChemE.
They knew the direction of their country was bad.
From left to right, 2-4-6 look more European than Mestizo.
(Or whatever indigenous to that region is called)
Our blood. The blood of American citizens.
It is not worth a war over Ukraine.
If a NATO member is invaded, then it is worth our blood.
But that has not happened.
Until it does, the warmonger morons who want a pre-emptive war because they are so sure about Putin can go fight as mercenaries themselves and STFU.
Give 'em citizenship if they join armed forces and survive; or just shoot them dead on the spot.
Next?
