New study reveals widening gap on racial inequality in higher education

AUC Berkeley-led study revealed that disparities in the share of Black and Latino students admitted to America's elite colleges and universities have endured and even widened over the last 40 years.

The study, "Shifting Tides: The Evolution of Racial Inequality in Higher Education from the 1980s through the 2010s," was published in Socius: Sociological Research for a Dynamic World and conducted by a team of researchers from UC Berkeley's Social Sciences D-Lab, SUNY Polytechnic Institute, University of Arizona and Portland State University. It used four national survey datasets to examine college attendance trends across different racial groups over several decades.

The results show a concerning pattern: despite more students from all races going to college, Black and Latino students are increasingly less likely to attend top-tier, four-year colleges compared to their white peers. This gap remains significant, even when family income and parents' education are factored in.

"The recent rapid expansion of higher education might raise an expectation of a decrease in racial inequality, but our findings show this isn't the case," said Byeongdon Oh, a UC Berkeley Social Sciences D-Lab researcher, who led the study. "The privileged continue to benefit the most from higher education opportunities."

This study is unique in its comprehensive approach, analyzing data from the High School and Beyond survey, the National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988, the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 and the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009. These datasets represent a wide spectrum of high school graduates over a span of four decades, providing a robust platform for analysis.

You are welcome to explain why funding in blue states can be as much as 4 times as the red states, but blacks in red states have higher outcomes, if the funding reaching the student himself is irrelevant.

You can't really be that clueless, can you?

The leftist,, government solution of throwing money at a problem never solved ANYTHING.

It's not lack of money that hampers learning. It's lack of valuing an education.

Ben Carson is a prime example.

You keep talking about school funding “reaching the student,” but you still haven’t explained what the hell that even means.

But poor kids are just as smart as white kids.

If would be happy to explain the red state vs. blue state differential in student performance, but you’ll first have to provide me with a link to the statistics that show this differential.

I think funding reaching the student is part of it.

Certain people work to obtain an education. Some demographics think a degree is a participation trophy.

We who employ such people know the difference.

While I agree that there are probably innate differences between groups of people. If that is the reason, then blacks should be failing in red states as well and that’s not the case.

It's because of these students don't live in an area with Magic Dirt.

https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=magic%20dirt%20theory

Magic Dirt Theory: The idea that where a person lives determines their behavior.

"Liberals sure believe in the magic dirt theory - they think that if they move DeShawn out of the ghetto and into the rich white suburbs, he'll suddenly be a good student and make something of himself."

Berkeley, Arizona and Portland State authors in a half-assed discipline? A three-ball losing combination.

Well, teach certain groups of people to value an education.

The trouble is that they value the credential, but not the education.

I agree that changing outside circumstances will not remold people. Liberals have always been wrong on the point that, to bring meaningful change, requires the person from the outside.

You assume a monolithic Afro Heritage citizenry.

There is diversity. The smart Afro Heritage citizens did not migrate to the City States and remained in the red zones where they are the basis of the Afro Heritage minority-minority.

And Asians in greater numbers. Maybe someone can hand them a copy of “The Bell Curve”.

“They have a problem with bad students.”

The inner city culture is rotten to the core. They desperately need more cops to protect them yet they won’t cooperate with any cop of any color. They need an education but attack anyone who tries to get one. And they believe they are the Master Race, the Kings and Queens of Africa - who just haven’t been given a fair shot in racist America.

I’m all out of pity and excuses. I’ve spent most of my life hoping to see progress and thought we were making some up thru the 90s. Then came Obama...

One of my BILs was a white who was bused to a nearly all black school back east in the early 70s. He and his 2 brothers didn’t eat or drink in the mornings. They said going to the bathroom at school would have been an automatic trip to the hospital, and picking up a basketball at the school a death sentence.

One went on to do foreign aid work in Africa. He loved working with blacks in the rural areas but they told him to never enter the city without one of them along to make sure he didn’t accidentally enter the wrong part of town. They told him he wouldn’t survive that sort of mistake.

The headline looked intriguing, but the content fell way short. I was hoping you'd post a link to an article that documented black student performance on a state-by-state basis for comparison purposes.

Instead, that article cites ONE red state (Mississippi) and one urban school district in Texas (Dallas).

And the premise of the article is that teaching METHODS (not money) are the basis of the improved black student performance.
