New study reveals widening gap on racial inequality in higher education

AUC Berkeley-led study revealed that disparities in the share of Black and Latino students admitted to America's elite colleges and universities have endured and even widened over the last 40 years.

The study, "Shifting Tides: The Evolution of Racial Inequality in Higher Education from the 1980s through the 2010s," was published in Socius: Sociological Research for a Dynamic World and conducted by a team of researchers from UC Berkeley's Social Sciences D-Lab, SUNY Polytechnic Institute, University of Arizona and Portland State University. It used four national survey datasets to examine college attendance trends across different racial groups over several decades.

The results show a concerning pattern: despite more students from all races going to college, Black and Latino students are increasingly less likely to attend top-tier, four-year colleges compared to their white peers. This gap remains significant, even when family income and parents' education are factored in.

"The recent rapid expansion of higher education might raise an expectation of a decrease in racial inequality, but our findings show this isn't the case," said Byeongdon Oh, a UC Berkeley Social Sciences D-Lab researcher, who led the study. "The privileged continue to benefit the most from higher education opportunities."

This study is unique in its comprehensive approach, analyzing data from the High School and Beyond survey, the National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988, the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 and the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009. These datasets represent a wide spectrum of high school graduates over a span of four decades, providing a robust platform for analysis.

Been trying to fix the 'gap' for 70+ years and yet here we are. According to this 'study' it not only isn't better it's getting worse. So, either the 'experts' are incompetent, or the gap isn't fixable.

Byeongdon Oh has not figred it out. THe BLack and Latino students realize ahead of their "white privilege" counterparts that higher educatcion is no longer education, au conraire it is indoctrination. So afirmatove action does not worl when education becomes idoctrination. The whites are continuing to be indoctrinated, the blacks and latinos are not. IN this case, failing or refusing to atend "higher indoctrination" institutions that used to be institutions of higher learning and education, is a SMART MOVE.Why waste the money and effort? Conc.usion: Blacks and Latinos are smarter than the white privioeged....they know a grift when they see one.

It’s a reflection in the disparities in among cultures. Blacks and Latinos generally don’t value the work that is required to get into and earn a degree from a top 4-year college. You will find they prefer the fly-by-night online for-profit institutions, earning non-science or engineering degrees. For the younger population at large, getting a university degree is increasingly a box-checking exercise, but it is even more so for minorities, to they seek the cheapest path of least resistance.

The gap exists because Democrats purposefully underfund black education in the inner cities, so they don’t build the foundation to better themselves.

Some are dumber than others and some have a majority culture that places no value on education, (getting good grades is acting white) hard work, individual responsibility, etc. the values that lead one into attempting to get edjumacated. Some groups would rather steal than work or collect welfare - just getting the government to steal for you because you’re too lazy to steal.

“Been trying to fix the gap. . .”

They aren’t really trying. The quality of primary and secondary education in public schools has declined steadily over the past 70 years as social activism and indoctrination has replaced teaching fundamental reading, writing and math skills. Standards of performance have been eliminated and functionally illiterate children of all races are being given high school diplomas for zero achievement. Children of any race graduating from the vast majority of failed public schools have no chance of going to a prestige university, much less succeeding at one.

Many studies show that without strong parenting chances for success in school and life are diminished. Until the culture in communities of color values education and parents start pushing children to excel there will be no progress in erasing the gap. It is the victim mentality in these communities that destroys achievement.

The emphasis on elite education as a measure of success has to stop. As a wise man once told me in my younger years, “A second class seat on the train of life will take you to the same destination as the first class seat. However you will go nowhere if you don’t get on the train.”

The elitist leftist academics controlling education see the disparity in the number of blacks going to prestige colleges as being due to racism or white privilege. The real reason is for the gap is children are not being taught how to get on the train of life by their parents and the liberal educators as young children. An 18 year old illiterate male gang banger waving a college diploma is not going to apply for admission to Harvard, much less be admitted. The same for an 18 year old illiterate female unwed high school grad with a worthless high school diploma, two children from different absentee fathers and a third on the way.

The experts are not only incompetent. Their degrees from self proclaimed prestige universities are simply fancy window dressing to hide their complete ignorance.

Why go to school when you can sell dope and steal your way to a good living? Well, that is until it abruptly comes to a dead end.

“Equity” requires black success equal or exceed national percentages of their population or = racism.

You missed that was their latest definition?

That’s why they invented Black Studies etc. - to give degrees in perpetuating the race industry.

Coincidence??

Affirmative Action and DEI are all about lowering the standards for everyone so that poor students can get ahead. In a backhanded way, that's encouraging poor performance...the equivalent of handing out participation trophies wherein everyone is a winner.

When you don't push students to work harder and strive for better, you get poorer performance.

Everyone knows this...except the Democrats.

Why is it “concerning”? Is th author accusing the universities of anti-black racism? Then back up that claim with evidence. Is it because of the number of blacks who are born to one parent homes and therefore have difficult childhoods? If so, what can be done?
