Why Trump supporters give him a pass on record-high unemployment
Axios ^ | 01 18 2024 | Emily Peck

Posted on 01/18/2024 5:05:54 PM PST by yesthatjallen

Supporters of former President Donald Trump cite his economic record as a reason to vote for him, but that's a bit puzzling.

Why it matters: Trump's economic record is only good if you leave off what happened from March 2020 to the end of his administration.

Zoom in: When the pandemic hit, the jobless rate soared to a record 14.8% — a level not seen since the Great Depression.

The rate did come down a bit after that, but when Trump left office there were fewer jobs in the country than when he got there — the first time that's happened since Herbert Hoover was president.

There were long lines at food pantries. Gas prices fell a lot — to $1.77 a gallon in April 2020 — something both the former president and his supporters note. But that was because the country was on lockdown and demand for gas plummeted.

The big picture: Trump supporters may be just giving him a pass on the pandemic economy, as the New York Times columnist Paul Krugman writes.

Wow.

They're actually trying to blame Trump for the pandemic economy crash.

I fear Emily Peck might be suffering from ADHD. The entire article is just a jumble of disjointed talking points.

Just spewing dem talking points.

The only people listening are those who are already voting dem.

Most people understand what was going on at the time and the context of said numbers, and they certainly don't hold it against President Trump.

In fact, most people remember very well when their state was finally allowed to go back to normal, and dem states typically were the last to reluctantly let go of their pandemic induced tyranny.

“Why Trump supporters give him a pass on record-high unemployment”

Have the idiots at Axios ever heard of extenuating circumstances?

This is beyond pathetic. If she really believes this trash, I honestly don’t know how she’s smart enough to find her way home at night. If she doesn’t believe it and still wrote anyway I can’t believe lightening doesn’t strike her.

I agree.

Dictator Trump should have shut everything down in February 2020 and stopped the Democrats' Super Tuesday primary from happening.

He'd have won the election for sure if he did that.

"as the New York Times columnist Paul Krugman writes."

Nuff said. Trump urged calm while Democrats urged panic. The Democrat governor of my state told everyone to go home, quit your jobs if you have to, and don't work. Democrats wanted the economy to crash.

Here's Emily Peek just last year, ready to graduate from UNC Chapel Hill.

Emily Peek is kinda cute but she didn't write this article.

Emily Peck did.

It was those liberal Clymers who were demanding we shut down, mask up, and stay home, then want to blame Trump for the economic consequences?!?
