Many cities have a “steam loop”, and usually more than one.

I remember, when I worked in Midtown in the 70s & early 80s, seeing steam pouring from sidewalk vents and from where the city crews had dug up water/steam pipes, for repair and replacement. Kind of eerie in 10ยฐ weather. Reminds me of scenes from "Bladerunner" etc.

“...thinking about burning a few tires at the top of Mt. Tabor early some morning...”

LMAO!

That would have caused a ruckus! The police would have enjoyed the laugh. NOT.

As Martha Stewart would say, “that’s a GOOD thing.”

At least the bums and homeless have a way to keep warm now. Put a tent over it and make it a shvitz. :0)

And it’s still slightly steaming and smoking. Nothing in Nature is ‘extinct’...

Volcano (1997). Enjoyably cheesy movie.

Back in the 1960’s the folks were friendly with a family near Hot Springs, MT (just west of Flathead Lake a ways).
That family heated their house with from a geo-thermal source. Can distinctly recall the sulphuric smell of their house. They had a small swimming pool, too. Same sulphuric odor.

It just occurred to me that long term exposure to the sulfur molecules could conceivably cause damage to certain organs. Lungs...brain...kidneys...liver...eyes. I think I’m gonna research that to see if my hunch is correct.

I read the report you linked to, and I for one have never heard of steam vents from heating systems being so hot that they can melt tar, which is what we are witnessing.

Especially steam that must go through enough ground to reach the surface in the Winter. That is a long way to go and still be hot enough to melt hardened tar.

I may be wrong, but Just sayings is all.

I am skeptical
