91% of small business owners say colleges are giving students 'unrealistic expectations' for life after graduation: Survey

91% of small business owners are concerned that "educational institutions are fostering unrealistic expectations among students regarding post-graduation and professional life."

An alarming number of small business owners are concerned that American colleges and universities are creating far-fetched expectations for graduates as they transition into the workforce, according to a new survey.

The Freedom Economy Index, a project of Red Balloon and PublicSquare, surveyed over 70,000 small business owners and found that 91% of respondents are concerned that “educational institutions are fostering unrealistic expectations among students regarding post-graduation and professional life.”

Small business owners who responded to the survey reported that ”salary levels,” “amount of work hours required,” and the “difficulty of work to be performed” were among the top three challenges that college graduates face when entering the workforce.

63% of respondents said that college graduates often have “unrealistic expectations on salary levels.” 62% reported that graduates have a hard time adjusting to the hours of work required for the job, and 50% said that graduates “have wrong expectations about the difficulty of work to be performed.”

One small business owner who responded to the survey said that college graduates “expect it to start at the top without having to work.”

”No actual ‘job’ training. They come in with mountains of debt and no experience,” one small business owner said.

”Inability to work independently, constant need for validation, unrealistic expectations,” said a small business owner when responding to the survey.

These people come out of college more worried about their DEI score than actually being a functional part of society,” another small business owner said.

Nearly half of those who responded to the survey said they have concerns about the “alignment of diploma subject matter with real-world business needs.”

My understanding is that the trades have become so valuable and have such high demand, that you can easily earn 6 figures at a lot of them.

The idea that everyone needs to have a college degree and should earn lots of money from it does a real disservice toa whole lot of people.

At one point college was a very good option. You chose a career you were interested in and learned it at school. However, then it became this “perfunctory” type of decision where you were expected to go “or else”. All this did was create a environment to party, be away from home and be indoctrinated. I would guess over 90% of jobs don’t require any college and most can be learned as an apprentice or training.
Companies used to look at schooling as a prerequisite now they want to see references and how long you’ve been at a job (track record).
We have a few friends that own businesses and they are (still) finding it really hard finding good help. They’re hiring people over 50 that want to work....because they have wasted enough time and money on the woke idiots that feel entitled to make $1 million per year working from home in their pajamas.

Agreed. And colleges now create niches of ridiculous subject-matter "degree" programs to babysit the academically lacking students who are compelled to go to college, many of them "people of color" who have no real interest, background or drive for college as it used to be.

Some of the courses of study I've read about are Babylon Bee material. "Art therapists" is a recent one. So, finger painting now requires a degree.

Even k-12 is.

Got kids fresh out of highschool demanding 25 bucks an hour for a entry level job.

I just say I started off at McDonald’s for 2.85 an hour. I suggest you get some skills under your belt before going for the big bucks.

Doctors and lawyers have had it great for many decades but AI is a real threat for current grads.

It probably cannot replace all lawyers and doctors but it could reduce demand for them by 50% or more which could lead to a reduction in wages as supply exceeds demand.

AI will be a threat to many jobs, I am glad I am old and have already made what I need personally.

Back in the 80s a cousin of mine got out of the military and used the GI bill to get through college.

After earning his degree he sought gainful employment as a college grad and never found a carrer path that fit his college major.

Dissatisfied and disappointed, he went to truck driving school and earned a very comfortable living while more or less making his own hours. Second best decision he ever made he says.

That was my first clue that trades were an absolutely acceptable carrer path and also the second best decision I ever made.

“For better or worse, after WWII, the Baby Boomer generation was often raised in accordance Dr. Benjamin Spock’s bestselling book. “

You weren’t raised in the South were you? I was raised up by the ‘go cut me a switch’ method.

I attended my daughter’s graduation this last summer…incredible delusions were expressed by people from the imaginary world of academia.

Luckily she is well grounded in reality.

She is working as a nurse at really good hospital, exactly what she has worked her butt off to do.

She is not lucky, just worked hard and now she is working as planned and expected.

Nursing degrees are in extreme demand.

“Telling young people to “suck it up and work hard” is, in my opinion, not a well thought out strategy to solving this.”

Telling them that and actually seeing results is a broad separation. Until the next generation gets on the stick, the previous one will have to pay the bills. So what do you tell them? Stay home and I will support you for the rest of my life and then you can go on welfre for the rest of yours. We’re already an inch from insolvency. Who’s going to support the machine when the current crop dies if this strategy is curtailed? Free enterprise isn’t free outside of government entitlements. And those didn’t materialize out of no where.

They can live the Hunter Biden lifestyle: selling fake "art" as part of a bribery scheme as well as collecting kickbacks for steering taxpayer funds to the right acquaintances.

These younger generations are being told to work hard but they clearly see inept token employees given money. They see politicians exempt themselves from such restrictions as insider trading and say to themselves, "I'm not becoming a slave to pay for that."

Very true.

Our small company is in the process of enhancing the software app we sell to incorporate AI. As someone who grew up in the computer world (from back in the 70s), generative AI will be as transformative as a) computers, b) the internet, and c) mobile phones -- only bigger.

I even remember when touch-tone phones were all the rage:-).

On a somewhat related note, we use offshore contractors for most of our development, and we have a couple of contractors whose spouses are doctors. Those doctors earn a very, very small percentage of what docs earn in the US -- and we're talking specialists.

As for the lawyers, those $1000 per hour lawyers might want to think about early retirement -- and quickly. Companies like this are moving fast.

Changes are in the wind, and it's going to blow hard!

Not to bash anyone but,

Anyone who goes to university with no clear plan for learning a particular subject to a high degree of mastery, a subject that points clearly to a particular profession or well-defined trade, is making a mistake.

Anyone going with the idea of "having fun" in college is likewise probably making a mistake.

Unless a high school senior approaches college like a job, with expectations of work every night and on weekends, with maybe a night off a week, is making a mistake to go to college.

I saw so many lazy, spoiled kids with silly majors, take so much retirement money from their poor parents, only to piss it away by partying for a year then flunking out... interfering with serious kids' attempts to work and progress in school. It was infuriating to watch.

The lazy, spoiled kids should get a room off campus, no tuition, no fees for books, etc. then party without wasting their parents retirement savings.
