Car thefts in the Big Apple have surged a staggering 191% since before the COVID pandemic took hold, new NYPD data shows — as Mayor Eric Adams declared Wednesday that “crime is down.”
A total of 15,802 vehicles were ripped off across the five boroughs through Dec. 31 — an alarming uptick from the 5,438 stolen back in 2019, according to the year-end review of crime statistics.
In the last year alone, auto thefts recorded the biggest spike of any major crime category in New York City — with the number of stolen vehicles up 15% more than the 13,741 swindled in the same period in 2022.
Despite the huge surge in stolen vehicles, overall crime across Gotham did drop slightly in 2023 — down 0.3% — compared to the year prior, the NYPD figures show.

And they are no longer reporting all the crime.

I’m no expert. But I think Texas should ship more illegals immigrants to New York City. That might help.

Yeah, the right benchmark is the pandemic. Nothing to do with the other important benchmarks: “defund,” BLM, antifa, loss of officers, downsizing the PD, rules that make it impossible to arrest people and investigate crime, Soros DAs, failure to prosecute, revolving door at the PD, etc, etc.
Honestly my first thought was how many of them were Kia’s with the defective remote hack? People can unlock the doors and start the engine with something akin to a garage door opener. They are used a lot for the smash and grab thefts - kids steal the Kias, ram into a window, grab what they can and then abandon the car at the scene.
How many were “stolen” from a parking space, and how many were carjacked with the driver still at the wheel?
The Post had to go back to 2019 so it included Trump. Carjacking was down through 2020 by 9% in ‘19 & ‘20. Up 200% since ‘21!

Early version of the reports were on a laptop in the police chief’s car which was carjacked, used in a mob shoplifting getaway and then set on fire.——only kidding.
