Texas Governor Greg Abbott has reshaped the U.S. political landscape on immigration by busing migrants from Texas to Democratic-led sanctuary cities.
Abbott, a Republican, in 2022 began busing migrants from the U.S.-Mexico border to sanctuary cities that protect undocumented immigrants from deportation, amid an influx of migrants arriving to the southern border. There were more than 2.4 million encounters at the U.S.-Mexico border during the 2023 fiscal year, up from roughly 1.7 million in 2021, according to data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
The governor has faced substantial backlash over the policy, as critics accuse him of using migrants as political pawns. The White House, for instance, has slammed it as a "cruel, dangerous, and shameful stunt." Abbott, however, has defended the move as necessary, pointing to Texas' border towns becoming overwhelmed with migrants, and that sanctuary cities should be prepared to take in more.

It isn’t so much that Abbott is hated. It is that, in my experience, Freerepublic has very high standards when judging politicians that are on our side of the aisle.
Stray but a little, and you will find the ire of many on this site.
He’s a Bushie, but on occasion does the right thing.
we could certainly do better, though.
Abbot has made sanctuary cities whine which has been amusing to all (except Democrats).
I know, but to quote Spike Lee he is doing the right thing.
In other words, it wasn’t a publicity stunt.
Can you name me just one thing you have against Abbott?
Can you show me when, where and how he is a “Bushie”?
Hated, and a lot of people hate Stitt of Oklahoma too. But you have to look at things from their perspective.
Open Borders and McGirt have put pressures on these Governors never before seen by any Governor ever anywhere. Far more unique than even DeSantis’s issues.
You can’t judge them by yesterdays standards. Those two are in the front line.
Not from Texas. Did Abbott support Paxton throughout the lawfare against him and Texas?
To be honest, I thought Abbott’s plan to ship illegals to Dim areas was just a publicity stunt that had no chance of changing hearts and minds of Dims regarding illegal immigration. I’m glad I was wrong.
Prior to Abbott sending illegals to sanctuary cities, Mayokas assured us there was no crisis at the southern border. Or, has everyone forgotten already?
Of course Paxton remained neutral during the Paxton show trial. Can you imagine the negative press (deservedly) had he joined in this freak show?
Abbot remained focused on protecting Texas from Biden and his mexican invaders.
One thing to note - while the accusations against Paxton were baseless in this case, Paxton does have a somewhat checkered past and is far from a shining example of how to conduct yourself in office. That’s not a problem in my book, but it is something that should be considered when evaluating someone’s public support or lack thereof. There are quite a few conservative Texans that generally approve of the job he does, but don’t like the guy otherwise and would vote for any other similarly conservative candidate over him were one to be presented (I am not among them).
I think the proper question when looking at someone’s position on Paxton is not necessarily whether they supported him or not but whether they *opposed* him.
He’s at least doing SOMETHING which is more than 99% of others are...
He should adopt the slogan “We’re all in this together” and paint it on the buses, since democrats love that expression so much.
Prior to Abbott having the cojones to send illegals to sap-happy Democrats’ peaceful,
serene, and love-filled “sanctuary cities,” demented Biden was forced into reacting.
So Biden goaded Mayokas into duping Americans, by lying,
reassuring us that there was “no crisis” at the southern border.
Abbott gave them sanctuary good and hard.
So why hasn’t Abbott secured the state’s elections...?
Thanks for publically admitting your political ineptness at seeing what was going to be obvious. A lot of Freepers should read more and comment less.
The White House, for instance, has slammed it as a “cruel, dangerous, and shameful stunt
I thought the White House was doing the exact same thing to small towns all over the country.
