Nikki Haley slammed for not mentioning ‘slavery’ as cause of the Civil War in ‘word salad’ answer during town hall

Democrats and supporters of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis criticized former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley on Wednesday after she refused to name slavery as the primary cause of the Civil War.

Haley, 51, made the apparent gaffe during a town hall event in Berlin, NH, after a voter asked the former United Nations ambassador to identify the cause of the deadliest war in American history.

The White House hopeful appeared caught off guard by the question and failed to mention the antebellum South’s “peculiar institution” in her response.

“I think the cause of the Civil War was basically how government was going to run,” Haley said. “The freedoms and what people could and couldn’t do.”

I’ve read up on the Civil, althought not deeply. I’ve concluded that the kernel cause of the war was that the North was losing their source of cheap cotton if the South left. It certainly wasn’t because of slavery, because slavery was only banned in Maine at the time and the rest of the Union had slaves.

“What do you want me to say about slavery? Next question,” Haley shot back.

President Biden’s X account shared a video of Haley’s town hall moment and tweeted, “It was about slavery.” ...

“Sorry, [Haley]. The Civil War was about slavery. Period,” Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.), who is running for the Democratic nomination for president, tweeted.

Well, like President Reagan said The trouble with our Liberal friends is not that they’re ignorant; it’s just that they know so much that isn’t so.”

Too bad about Nikki’s campaign already being over and they haven’t even told her yet.

... slavery was only banned in Maine at the time and the rest of the Union had slaves.

That's kind of true, the Union went along with slavery via compromises since inception.

The real cause was those pesky Republicans! Excerpts of

https://www.thoughtco.com/top-causes-of-the-civil-war-104532

"... the Republican party (established in 1854). In the North, this new party was seen as both anti-slavery and for the advancement of the American economy. This included the support of industry and encouraging homesteading while advancing educational opportunities. In the South, Republicans were seen as little more than divisive."

"The presidential election of 1860 would be the deciding point for the Union. Abraham Lincoln represented the new Republican Party"

So there you go. The Civil War started because the South hated having a Republican president. And here we are today, with many in the country upset about the prospect of another Republican president, namely Donald Trump!

> ...the rest of the Union had slaves...

Can you please provide some support for that contention? I'm no expert on the Civil War era, but last I knew, at the time of the war most of the States of the Union were "free" states, that is, did not permit slavery.

If that's not the case I'd appreciate knowing the source(s) of your data. Thanks.

My evidence is simply observational and a good understanding of human nature. When the South tried selling its cotton to Europe, for the world price, instead of the domestic priced enforced upon them by the Northern textile industrialists, they proceeded to block the South from doing so during the cotton blockade.

I know the South seceded over slavery, because what choice did they have if they understood that the North would agitate for the end of slavery but not compensate the South by paying a higher price for cotton? This would have bankrupted the Southern plantations. Being bankrupt, the Southern plantations would have to sell their land for whatever somebody was willing to pay. This would have opened the opportunity for the North to own the land and continue to grow the cotton at the lowest price possible to feed their textile mills.

I’m not claiming that this is what was happening, but it would fit with everything else that was happening.

“after she refused to name slavery as the primary cause of the Civil War”

Following her refusal to recognize slavery as the main factor behind the Civil War.

Don’t be an idiot. Read the Virginia secession debate.

The issue was slavery.

Breckenridge’s democrats wanted to expand slavery into the territories.

The War Between the States was about slavery in the same way the American Revolution was about tea.

But a southern governor should have had a canned answer for this gotcha question.

I think slavery was banned in Massachusetts, of which Maine was a part.

Heck.... We revolted against the most powerful empire in the world over BOOZE rather than tea!!! We dirty colonials wanted our hard apple cider. Tea just happened to have a tax stamp. History is so complicated BUT our marxist overlords just love to simplify it to “democrats were always wonderful and republicans have always been evil slavers.” But all one has to do is read the writings of our founding fathers and the federalist papers.

A contributing factor was that cotton was not a profitable crop without slavery.

The initial motivation for the North to oppose the secession of the Southern states was not concerned about the continuation of slavery. In fact, the Lincoln Administration proposed a constitutional amendment that would have guaranteed the continuation of slavery. The Southern States seceded because they were losing their former equality within the Union. Most immigration into the United States was going to the North, because of the growth of industry and the opening up of the frontier for small farmers. Therefore the North dominated the House of Representatives. With the admission of Kansas as a free state, the Senate would become Northern dominated.

By and large, Southern state governments were dominated by the plantation owners who fancied themselves as the inheritors of chivalry and honor. The dominance of the North in the US government meant that tariffs would be raised to protect domestic manufacturers. Southern plantation owners had become quite wealthy due to cheap labor from their slaves and and wanted to buy less expensive manufactured goods from Europe. At the time the South had little industry other than railroads to transport cotton, their main export, to textile mills in Europe. While the Southern secessionist use a lot of rhetoric defending their social order and the benefits of slavery, the real motivation for secession was economic. The ruling class in the South believed that they could conduct business with Europe, and that England and France would provide military support should the North invade.

It is said that all wars are economic in nature.

I do believe that South is not innocent of this matter and I don’t mean to give that impression that they are innocent, but the North was far less innocent and virtuous on the matter than what is taught.

Complex topic. no one talks about excess taxation on the South.
“The American Civil War was a complex conflict with many factors contributing to its outbreak. One of the issues that led to the war was the tariff policy of the United States1. In the 1850s, Congress increased the import tax from 15% to 37%, which was opposed by the South. The South believed that the tariff policy favored the North and that they were being unfairly taxed2. In 1860, 80% of all federal taxes were paid for by the South, but 95% of that money was spent on improving the North1. However, it is important to note that the Civil War was not fought solely over tariffs, but rather a combination of factors including slavery, states’ rights, and economic differences23.
