Lindsey Graham promises ‘war’ on NY over proposed Chick-fil-A bill
Nypost ^ | 12/23/2023 | Jon Levine

South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham said he would go to “war” with the state of New York should Albany legislators pass a bill to force some Empire State Chick-fil-A’s to operate seven days a week.

The iconic southern chicken chain has long been closed on Sundays, in keeping with the religious beliefs of its original Christian founder, S. Truett Cathy.

“This is war,” Graham posted to X in response to an article about the bill. “If this goes forward, I will be introducing legislation withholding federal funds from any city or state that requires @ChickfilA to stay open on Sunday.”

There seem to be layers to this issue which would call for closer scrutiny of what all this is about, this is from July 2021.

Planned Chick-fil-A locations at thruway rest stops draw backlash, support from NY state lawmakers
By Morgan McKay New York State
UPDATED 7:51 PM ET Jul. 13, 2021

“However, the restaurant Chick-fil-A is drawing pushback from at least four state lawmakers, who are asking the Thruway Authority leave Chick-fil-A out of its plazas, citing the company’s long history of donating to anti-LGBTQ+ organizations.

State Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal said the fast-food chain goes against many of the principles that New York has fought for, including marriage equality and anti-gender discrimination.

“Why is the state endorsing this fast-food chain by allowing it to be on New York state property?” Assemblywoman Rosenthal explained. “I know they’ve said ‘well, no taxpayer money involved in getting them’ etc., but they are sitting on New York state property first. Secondly, there are many other chains that can offer delicious food on the Thruway.”

The Thruway’s 27 rest stops will be undergoing $300 million worth of renovations starting on July 29.

Applegreen, the convenience store chain that is taking over the lease on the Thruway’s rest stops, will be privately funding the project as part of a deal reached with the state.

In a statement, the Thruway Authority emphasized that no taxpayer dollars or toll payer funds will be supporting these upgrades.”

Nothing quite as comforting as knowing Linda has your back.

No this is something to agree with him on. NY has always had food businesses that are not open on weekends (because they’re in business districts and there were no customers) or on Saturdays (if they were orthodox Jewish).

When does the current contract expire?

Of course, the state could try to reopen the contract negotiations at the price of opening everything in the contract to re-negotiation.

See post 42 about last year’s attacks.

This is the sponsor of the bill of this thread.

Tony Simone Aims to Be Chelsea’s First LGBTQ Assemblymember
“Tony Simone has been a visible player, dating back 25 years, in LGBTQ, political, and non-profit circles in New York. He has worked on the staffs of the late State Senator Catherine Abate, former State Comptroller Carl McCall, and former City Council Speaker Christine Quinn; served on Hillary Clinton’s 2000 US Senate campaign and volunteered in Quinn’s several Council runs as well as her 2013 mayoral campaign; and worked at non-profits including People for the American Way and Hudson River Park Friends.”

“Simone supports the full decriminalization of sex work — an issue of growing importance on the LGBTQ rights agenda, but one that divides those advocating elimination of penalties only for those offering sex services from other activists who argue that only by removing sanctions for everyone engaged in the sex trade can the industry be made safer.”

This guy is a jackass and a camera hog who rivals Chuck Schumer.

Word of advice to anyone from Lindsey Graham’s staff who may lurk on FR: Make sure your boss knows all the facts about an issue before he looks like a moron by running his mouth.

Does Linda Graham even know that the proposed NY law only applies to restaurants that are operating within a state-owned highway right-of-way?

Probably not — since this arrangement is a relic of the pre-Interstate Highway System era and South Carolina may not have any of them.

I looked at all the Thruway sites...sure have crappy choices. Better bet is to get off the Thruway to eat...and only use these places for gas or the john.

Graham knows what’s going on. It’s about “Religion”. It’s still about a “contract”.

It has nothing to do with religion. It has everything to do with a contract … or two contracts, to be specific: the 33-year operating agreement between the New York State Thruway Authority and the private company that was contracted to renovate and operate the service areas, and the lease agreement between that company and Chick-fil-A. It’s really that simple.

Hyperbole at its finest.

This kind of thing diminishes legitimate criticism of the policy.
