Deputies: Teens from national swatting group 'LulzSEC' charged for Baker School call

Okaloosa County deputies are charging two 14-year-olds believed to be part of a "national swatting group" following an investigation into a swatting call at Baker School in November.

Those arrested are Landyn Whittington of Baker (19 felony charges) and Camwryn Gulley of Mansfield, Texas (four felony charges). Whittington is an online student from Baker.

The sheriff's office says the group they are a part of -- called "LulzSEC" -- pays members with cryptocurrency to commit crimes.

"Member Camwryn Gulley told investigators Landyn Whittington asked for a member of the group to swat Baker School," a release from the sheriff's office states.

The swatting call came into the Crestview Police Department on Nov. 3 around 8:45 a.m.

The caller said there was an armed individual preparing to start a mass shooting at Baker School. Crestview HS and other area schools were also placed on lockdown as a precaution.

WEAR News was on scene that day following the call. One student said he heard alarms and thought it was a fire drill until a teacher grabbed him from the hallway and told him to hide under a desk.

"They kicked down the door. Obviously they did the routine," a student said. "Everyone comes in. Guns out. It's kind of scary -- lasers, flashlights."

Okaloosa County investigators traced the call to a home in Mansfield, Texas. Mansfield Police interviewed Gulley and searched his cell phone.

If we had a real DOJ there would be some RICO charges forthcoming.

Daily calls on a “Tucker telephone” would be a good start.

That’s why these two “teens” need to do some very hard jail time!

People could easily get killed in such pranks.

That is the entire point of such "pranks".

The perpetrators have the mistaken belief that they cannot be traced and can literally get away with murder.

If the authorities want to spend the time and effort, they can almost always catch SWATTERs. Kudos to the police and prosecutors (just this one time) for working to do that.

People have gotten killed.

Personally of the opinion that if you call in a false report that you should be charged with whatever crime you called in.

That would stop it in a hurry.

Was not a “prank”, excerpt says they are paid to commit these crimes.

Thanks for posting. LulzSEC...national swatting group. Originator? Members? Traceability of call? Penalties? Convictions? Length of sentences?

The lie is the weapon used most often by the criminal. Potentially deadly results from their lies.
