Joe Scarborough: self-hating Southerner?
Scarborough -- originating from the "cracker counties" of the Florida panhandle -- sometimes likes to stress his Southern upbringing, and describe himself as a "simple country lawyer" who attended two southern state universities.
But the Morning Joe host has developed an ugly habit of mocking southern Republicans by putting on their supposed accents. We've caught Scarborough doing that twice in the case of House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer of Kentucky, who at least sports an accent. Check out this instance of Scarborough fantasizing Comer saying [at 0:25], of his supposed lack of evidence against Joe Biden regarding Hunter's influence peddling:
"We ain't got nuthin' but a squirrel fryer and a hound dog."
Today, Scarborough tried to ridicule Speaker of the House Mike Johnson of Louisiana. Calling him "Jesus's man in Congress," Scarborough, putting on a heavy southern accent, imagined Johnson saying [at 1:47]:
"All you got to do is look at the Bible. That's what I do."
Regional accents are great. America would lose a lot if everyone spoke blandly like a network news reader. But the simple fact is that Mike Johnson doesn't have a detectable Southern accent.

Other than being an all-around ass, why does Southern born-and-raised Joe Scarborough mock Southern accents?
Ping to Liberal Media Criticism list.
according to this Southerner, uh, Florida is not the ‘real’ South - and while Joe might have been a ‘country boy’ in some form, he shed its better points when in DC. and now with his Leftie dominatrix, well......
Regional accents are great.
“according to this Southerner, uh, Florida is not the ‘real’ South”
Even rural, northern Florida including the Panhandle?
I’ve heard the areas of Destin, Panama City, etc. referred to as the Redneck Riviera.
Maybe some southern boy will eventually catch up with POS, and kindly knock his teeth out for him.
Joe Scarborough’s getting shrill - I suspect he knows Trump’s going to win the Presidency. AND that Joe Biden will go down in history and the worst and tackiest President of all time.
What a pathetic “human being.” (I use the term loosely. 🙄)
The Speaker has a background in broadcasting. My wife worked in radio for 25 years. Most of the people actually trained for that role went to great efforts to eliminate their accents. She went to school in Boston and she laughed at all of the work that went into getting rid of a Boston accent.
I don’t like Joe. But I explain: There is a region that goes from Jacksonville, across northern Florida without a discernible accent. Big call centers used to settle in those areas because of the low cost of living…and the fact that callers from around the country could understand the agents.
The influx of Spanish accents and ethnic accents have kind of destroyed that theory…but thats how it was 25 years ago.
Scarborough AND his bedmate, Mika, have the most condescending and arrogant, NASALLY, fake intelligent speech and to me THEY are nails on a chalkboard. It is rich for him to criticize Johnson who doesn’t even sound like he is from Lousiana. Actually, I enjoy listening to Congressman Higgins and his accent. Joe Scarborough can fade away, hopefully.
This native Floridian begs to differ with you. It’s the southern part of the state that isn’t very much Southern. You can hear the Southern accent in the northern to central part of the state if you aren’t close-minded about it. Some thicker than others, to be sure, but it’s there.
Speaking of Southern Accents, that’s one of my very favorite Tom Petty songs, and the album by the same name is darn good, too.
Banjo Boy knows all about southern hicks since he starred in the 1972 Deliverance film.
Mr. Cuckold and his adulterous wife will soon be looking for new places to grovel in 2025. Sharing his swinger wife with other men will not save him. /spit
Who gives a rats ass what this sorry cuck has to say.
Did Joe and Ho explain why the border should be left wide open and oil drilling shut down too? No, he just called him names.
Backcountry Florida panhandle is Cracker Land. Trust me.
Interesting, but how does that relate to Scarborough mocking Mike Johnson of Shreveport, Louisiana for his southern accent, even though he doesn’t have one?
Along similar lines to your point, this summer I visited the furthest north region of Maine. I assumed the accents would be even stronger than the Maine accents heard, for example, in Murder She Wrote. But the people had no accents. Someone explained that the strong accents are actually a southern Maine thing!
Exactly.
don’t associate ‘rednecks’ with the very distinct Southern culture of literature, art, food, etiquette, hospitality, dance - as it presumes crassness and lack of sophistication. although there is crossover from the rural to the more cultivated. having lived with the presumption of being an ignorant ‘redneck’ because i am from the South, i see it for the putdown it is.
