JAKARTA, Indonesia – Indonesia’s Marapi volcano in the West Sumatra province erupted on Sunday, sending a thick plume of toxic ash and smoke nearly 10,000 feet into the air and was accompanied by a deafening roar that could be heard for miles, according to the country’s disaster management agency.
Indonesia’s National Agency for Disaster Countermeasure (BNPB) said in a news release that the nearly 9,500-foot volcano began erupting just before 3 p.m. local time Sunday, and volcanic ash rain from the eruption was reported to have occurred in the Nagari Lasi area of the Canduang District in West Sumatra’s Agam Regency.

Or burned alive.
Pinatubo was VEI 6. St. Helens was 5, quite a bit less, 1/10th actually (log scale), and did not launch ejecta nearly as high as Pinatubo. Marapi so far is only a burp, at 10k feet plume height. Pinatubo sent stuff 28 MILES high (still a piker compared to Krakatoa’s 50 mile high plume, but while Krakatoa was incredibly violent, it’s effect on temperatures in turn was much less than Tambora, which had a plume height of only 27 miles, but a monstrous VEI of 7.
The volcanic explosivity index (VEI) is a relative measure of the explosiveness of volcanic eruptions. It was devised by Christopher G. Newhall of the United States Geological Survey and Stephen Self in 1982.
Volume of products, eruption cloud height, and qualitative observations (using terms ranging from "gentle" to "mega-colossal") are used to determine the explosivity value. The scale is open-ended with the largest eruptions in history given a magnitude of 8. A value of 0 is given for non-explosive eruptions, defined as less than 10,000 m3 (350,000 cu ft) of tephra ejected; and 8 representing a mega-colossal explosive eruption that can eject 1.0×1012 m3 (240 cubic miles) of tephra and have a cloud column height of over 20 km (66,000 ft). The scale is logarithmic, with each interval on the scale representing a tenfold increase in observed ejecta criteria, with the exception of between VEI-0, VEI-1 and VEI-2.
Pinatubo:
“The EPA fines for this are going to be a shock.”
They are indeed. They may even make the volcano go out of business and leave the country altogether. It obviously undervalued its potential explosive tendencies.
Thank You.

More like cooling ash has the effect of blocking solar and galactic radiation.
So The 28th climate conference has something new to complain about to get more funding.
I like a good Stromboli with extra marinara on the side.
Oh, and thanks for that graphic.
;-)
I was just rereading my post and had to chuckle at “only 27 miles”.
FWIW, Tonga was another Krakatoa style pop, with a VEI of 5.7, but a plume 38 miles high, that started underwater.. 2nd highest known, I believe? This article cites “eruption rate” which is for sure an interesting way to consider an eruption.

Correction, 36 miles high. Still darn impressive!

It’s a documentary, 54 minutes long, and quite interesting.
Thank you.
Ping to post 54 for you as well.
Dunno, with her personality she just might still be a virgin...
So who gets to hold the “dumb end” of the Tape Measure for this underwater part of the Data Collection ?
