LA gangster who shot and paralyzed a 16-year-old girl now works for  California's Department of Public Safety after Gavin Newsom slashed his 162 year sentence to just eight years

Jarad Nava, now 28, works as an assistant in the Department of Public Safety and is an advocate of prison reform. He was featured in a Los Angeles Times profile Thursday and credits California's Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom for his early release.

In 2012, while drunk and high, he shot into a car carrying the relatives of a rival gang member. One of the victims was 16-year-old Yesenia Castro, who was shot in the back.

The bullet severed her spinal chord and she was paralyzed from the waist down.

Nava, who was 17 at the time, rejected a plea deal that would have sentenced him to 30 years in prison.

After trial, he was sentenced to 162 years in prison on four counts of attempted murder.

In the years that followed, he was featured in a prison reform documentary that highlighted his case and the plight of young offenders who the filmmakers felt had been unfairly represented.

Yesenia, his victim, was interviewed for the film and said she wanted him to spend 50 years in prison.

'When they arrested him, I felt relieved. I don't want him to be dead or anything, I just want him to pay a price,' she said.

Despite that, his sentence was commuted to 10 years by Gavin Newsom. He eventually walked free in 2020, eight years after the shooting.

Newsom, gushing over how he has turned his life around, told The L.A. Times that he 'cried' when he saw him 'dressed up' in his suit working at the state capitol.

'I came back and started crying in the office.

'To read a report about somebody, to see a ridiculous overcharging, to consider his age in relationship to that crime, to take a risk on a commutation

Elon has it right, no excuse for censorship unless it’s illegal or violating reasonable TOS. Especially if ‘free’ is in the name and takes donations.

The picture should have the paralyzed girl in the wheelchair front and center with Newsome and his boyfriend wearing the same exact smiles.

Fair point. And that’s where the property owner takes a risk. The property owner gets to make the rules. And he can make the rules very restrictive. But the risk is that the customer walks away.

And that applies to posting. Posting is what moves Free Republic forward. Erase too many posts, and maybe folks will stop posting.

We are not anywhere near that point, in my opinion. But it sure would be nice if a brief and non-snarky reason was given when a post disappears.

“But the risk is that the customer walks away.”

That happened. This could be a multi million site, but alas. Trade off for being chasing away everyone.

Everyone’s too scared to criticize the lack of updates since 1999 or the censorship or anything, so they’ll just ban. Keeps the people inline.

“In 2012, while DRUNK AND HIGH, he shot into a car carrying the relatives of a rival gang member. One of the victims was 16-year-old Yesenia Castro, who was shot in the back.”

Getting drunk and high is no way to go through life—but it can get you hired into a police department!

I’ve got to be honest. I like the lack of updates. It keeps this site simple. Sometimes less fancy stuff is better.

As for the censorship, I sort of police myself. I know by now where the boundaries are. I suppose most folks here do the same.

Is that taking the easy way out? I don’t think so. It’s kinda like a restaurant sign saying “formal attire required”. I could try to meet that standard, and enjoy a good meal. Or I could go somewhere else.

Anyway, regards. Perhaps I’ve been rambling on about this topic too much. I think I’ll call it a night.

Well I don’t mind the layout much, I’ve been here on and off since 2000. I wish there was a 30 min or so edit to correct things and a BIG improvement would be a like/dislike button.

There’s a lot of smart people here, and a lot got screwed. I gave this site $20 back in the day and learned my lesson. Got banned cause of a coven of evil biddies.

I don’t really hold any grudges though. It is their site, but they need to have a bit of an upper lip I think.

The gangster’s smiling because he’s functionally illiterate and yet has a $100K/yr gig.

“But why is the gangster smiling?”

Because he thinks he may be the President of the United States.

If that rival isn’t dead this guy may still have a problem.

Nava learned his lesson. He will use that knowledge and apply it in the future. He will either kill again or be killed.

What kind of education can a gangster thug really achieve before the age of 20?
