Why Have Military Academies? The fall of West Point raises an uncomfortable question for patriotic Americans
American Thinker ^ | 10/10/23 | Tony Lentini

Established in 1802 under President Thomas Jefferson, West Point is our nation’s oldest armed services academy and the first engineering school in the United States. Why engineering? Because it is a battlefield-relevant discipline that promotes the kind of critical thinking military leaders need to fight and win wars. Successful combat officers must be able to solve basic engineering problems, such as determining whether bridges will support trucks and armored vehicles, how best to cross rivers and other obstacles, how to plan and build fortifications, and where to place demolition charges, to name just a few required skills.

According to the West Point website, “graduates were largely responsible for the construction of the bulk of the nation’s earliest waterways, infrastructure, harbors, the Washington Monument, and surveys for the future transcontinental railroads. Perhaps the greatest engineering feat in world history was the Panama Canal completed in 1914 under the direction of Colonel George W. Goethals (Class of 1880), an Army engineer.”

All that began to change in the mid-1980s, when West Point transitioned to a liberal arts institution offering degrees in a wide variety of disciplines, many of which have little to no relevance to the battlefield or to leading troops. Most useless and counterproductive of these is a minor that now woke West Point offers: “Diversity and Inclusion.”

Courses within this minor include Social Inequality; Power and Difference; The Politics of Race, Gender and Sexuality; World Religions; Sex and Civilizations; Race, Ethnicity, Nation; and Society & Culture in American History. These are fitting for a military academy that now promotes anti-white racism, communist-style self-criticism sessions for white cadets, transgenderism, discriminatory entry requirements, and race-over-merit promotions.

I sure hope that’s the way of it.

So do I. We both have a son, so I’m betting you and I are much closer in age than your son and I. I’m 6 foot 1 and 175 so we might be close physically as well. The big difference may be, I grew up in a military environment unrelated to one of the academies, and was a career officer getting there via ROTC rather than the academy route. The same route my father pursued and served thirty five years.

I see what is being done to the elite military academies to water down the skills that made our military of the past what it took to win a protracted conflict on two continents at the same time. I don’t like what I see, and it needs to return to the principles and traditions that produced gallantry and bravery in combat that was a key to war winning ability.

I retired in 1987. At that time the women’s movement was just reaching success, where at least in the USAF women in combat was shortly going to be a reality. I didn’t do much to stop that progression other than grouse vocally that the founders were against women in combat other than nurses, and had stuck to that principle through at least the Korean War.

The wander off the paths of our Founders and into leftist ideology has only increased with the passage of time and the re-education of the public to accept women in combat, watered down curriculum as well as the weakening of the former rigid physical requirements for service men and women. The military most of all suffers from civilian meddling in the traditions that have served us so well in the past to include the one room school house where a great majority of our war winning service men came from prior to WWII.

The end looks bleak, but I agree with your son. We know what has served us in the past and those that believe otherwise are a minority compared to those who believe in what is right. Those had better be the ones that prevail when the going gets tough. Go woke and go broke isn’t just a slogan it applies in spades to the armed forces of the United States of America and war has a way of bringing out the best in us. We are at war. Especially with those who desire to corrupt our military.

Re: “freaking out”

I live in a small town. All over my state, the dead and maimed from
Iraq are neighbors. High school coaches. History teachers. Firemen. People we know.

And for what? We were attacked by Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.

I know you probably didn’t mean it that way, but “freaking out”?

You bet I was.

100% Conscription into National Guard for 2 years full time public projects and Border Patrol/FEMA/Peace Corps use....ie replace lots of career Federal workers.

Two days a month, two weeks a year service until 45yoa. Lots of tax breaks and exemptions.

..........

With the current population?

I don’t think so.

“Religion had gotten me through a lot of depression and a lot of hard times in the military, but it was also preventing me from being my true self. So, there was a lot of internal turmoil.” After some intensive soul-searching and therapy, Natalie came out to her family — and to Kara.

That quote got my attention. Successful battle for control of the demon within over many years, ultimately to lose it. I might understand the soul searching, but wonder who was in charge of the therapy. Then there is the issue of equipment removal. Don’t remember which one had that problem to add to the burden.

I’m sure mom and dad could give an earful after the fact. It has to be evidence of their children listening to and obeying spirits from the wrong side of right. Is there any other explanation for the behavior?

Clearly, none of our present government academies can do it, even with good entering candidates.

Clearly none are willing to buck the system at their individual peril, but I’m thinking that is what it might take for reality to step in.

Sounds like you've identified it correctly.

Who else can lead humans into so much deception other than the author of...

Did GOD really say?

“Religion had gotten me through a lot...

Aye; there's the rub - religion.

It can only get you so far.

But the Author of the religion had better be Jesus, or else that 'religion' is turn out to be merely a placebo.

I understand your point, but mine was that those fomenting us starting wars with Russia, China and Iran aren’t thinking it through.

I don’t care for those here trying to start WWIII.
It’s mostly end of life geriatrics that don’t care and have no skin in the game.
Many posters here are calling for the US to nuke Tehran.
It’s sheer stupidity and insanity.

I, and my brother, were both serving when 9/11 occurred.
How many here have children serving that they’re willing to send to a global war?
I bet close to zero. Boomer children are grown.

Born 1950, 7 kids, 2 grandsons.

Yes I know the finish line is out there but I care deeply about my kids and grandkids - and once you “see” the neocon propaganda being written in real time you can’t un-see it.

Disgusting. I think we agree.

I think we do. Just eyes looking at the same thing from different vantage points.

"We know what has served us in the past and those that believe otherwise are a minority compared to those who believe in what is right. Those had better be the ones that prevail when the going gets tough."

Thanks for that.. and thanks to you and your family's lifelong commitment to our nation :)

I think someday soon we're going to need soldiers, real ones, with a genuine commitment to God and country. Considering all the social engineering the left has been doing in our public schools, they may be few and far between..

I served from Jan. 65' - Jan. 68. (16c20)
