Pressed on abortion in a recent interview, Trump blasted his rival, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, for signing a law banning abortions after the baby has a detectable heartbeat. Trump declared, “I think what he did is a terrible thing and a terrible mistake.”
Trump is being honest. There is no reason to doubt that he said what he really believes: that restricting abortion to any meaningful extent is a terrible mistake and that he has no will to fight to protect human life in the womb. Before denouncing DeSantis (and, implicitly, every other Republican governor and state legislator who has protected babies from being killed in the womb, along with the voters who supported them), Trump insisted he would be able to cut a deal with Democrats to bring “peace” on this issue. However, in promising this peace he refused to commit to even a 15-week limit on abortion.
Trump did not need to be personally pro-life in order to form a political alliance with pro-lifers. But that alliance cannot survive his public announcement that our wins since Dobbs are “terrible.” It is clear that Trump would have no further use for us if he were elected to a second term.
If Trump wins he will never run for anything ever again, so the leverage to get him to do anything he doesn’t want to do disappears.
We could not trust Trump to sign any pro-life laws, given that he is currently denouncing those passed by Republican-led states. We could not trust him to direct his administration to enact pro-life policies, or to roll back the many pro-abortion policies put in place by President Joe Biden. We certainly could not trust him to use his position as president to make the case for life and against abortion.

“Pro-Lifers Shouldn’t Trust Trump”
indeed ... they can trust only biden ...
Pro-life and abortion issues are state issues NOT Federal Government issues. The Federal governments requirements are clearly outlined in the Constitution and they have failed miserably at following it.
Who appointed the justices that overturned Roe v. Wade?
Truth seekers can not trust the media. Believe half of what you see and none of what you hear.
The loudest ones came from Beltway/corporate "pro-life" groups whose advisory boards were filled with former politicians who had already demonstrated that they were willing to sell out on this particular issue.
A myopic article by a supposed elite demonstrating a lack of maturity in critical thinking.
Yes trump is not a savior that will stop all abortion for eternity, that doe snot mean he does not have more to add in the fight for a just and even biblically just government.
Nebuchadnezzar was by no means a righteous leader yet with Daniel as council he did many things for the good of the exiled nation. Daniel understood this and worked with the situation G-d gave him
Cyrus was also FAR form a righteous G-d fearing leader yet it was his edict as G-d used him that allowed the rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem.
Stop looking for a perfect leader, instead look for the leaders on the stage whom G-d is using to further his Kingdom. We are all broken yet he uses us all to his perfect plan.
Pro-life and abortion issues are state issues NOT Federal Government issues.
The leftist chorus chants...We’ve got him now.
Well said.
Does your State allow abortions? If so, you need to get to work. Give them the Alabama model to work with.
If you’re wondering why Trump had to choose Pence look no farther than thr headline. Trump was clear, he’d try to work something out but “if you want to k own the truth this should be done at the state level”. That is the way to go. The Rats will win this at a federal level and it won’t be close. They would enshrine roe v Wade into federal legislation. Repukes will never, NEVER pass an abortion ban. They’ll run on passing it for the next 30 years. It’s not going to happen. They just want the issue whereas Trump wants a solution which is why he’s not trying to demagogue the issue like the phonies. Repeal and Replace by another name.
Trump is threading the political needle that is ultimately to our advantage — and that includes Life.
President Reagan addressed the crowd remotely from the White House, and he had all the strength and conviction of a wet noodle.
That was the last time I ever attended, because I knew the nation's political leaders in Washington didn't give a damn about abortion.
Donald Trump was elected in 2016 -- and is the clear frontrunner in 2024 -- because real people in this country are so done with what "senior contributors to The Federalist" and "postdoctoral fellows" have brought to the table.
Trump shouldn’t trust ProLifers. They are terrible allies. They evaporated at the midterms.
Where did you go?
I thought the repeal of Roe v. Wade closed the issue of abortion at the federal level?
If the issue is NOT closed at the federal level, what was the point of decades of Conservative hard work and resistance to Roe v. Wade?
If Trump is referring to abortion at the state level - then - I think his position is politically realistic.
Bottom Line - a solid majority of American voters reject a total ban on abortion, in a solid majority of American states.
No politician in Washington DC can be trusted, as such, regarding abortion.
Abortion restrictions are not going to be passed by Congress.
Whatever happens with our laws on abortion will happen in the states.
