Before July 24, then-Cpl. Peyton Nott had never met a four-star general, or any generals, for that matter.
But that day, Nott received an unexpected Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal from the top general in the Marine Corps and — after the corporal gave an off-the-cuff speech at the award ceremony — a meritorious promotion to boot.
Beginning in February, he had to step into a billet typically reserved for gunnery sergeants, leading a team of eight mechanics and operators, according to a statement from his battalion to Marine Corps Times. The gap between a lance corporal and a gunny is one of four ranks and many years of experience.
All the while, Nott had to transfer his battery’s equipment — “over 80 pieces of rolling stock,” according to his battalion — to another motor pool.
Nott had to learn the ins and outs of a staff noncommissioned officer job: How was he supposed to request to move a vehicle from one place to another? How was he supposed to request more fuel? Were his Marines properly trained? Were they making it to their appointments?
The gunny who replaced him in July had 16 years of experience in the Marine Corps, according to Nott, who has only five.
“I became pretty worn down, but, I mean, you gotta keep pushing forward,” Nott said.

OOH-RAH!!!!!!!.........................
Misunderstanding - Coeporal is E-4. Sergeant is E-5.
My mistake. I thought he was a lance corporal.
Nothing motivates a deserving service member more than a meritorious advancement.
Good for him. Good for the Corps.
This sounds a lot like my nephew: “the native of Jefferson City, Tennessee, decided at age 6 he would one day join the military.”
My nephew had the same dream from the same age, did a Corps Cadet program in college and enlisted in the Corps. He had a similar logistics job moving materiel in the South Pacific. He is a degreed mechanical engineer and his Corps experience really prepared him for a great career. He is an excellent engineering manager now, getting frequent promotions and is in demand in his company for the most challenging, complex projects.
back in the day, rank was thought to go like this: Sgt (e5) after 5 years, Staff Sgt (e6) after 6 years etc...
not sure about today.
maybe Sgt. Nott has aspirations for the officer side?
Semper Fi, Sgt. Nott.
In the new -- woke -- Marine Corp, wouldn't that be two gay parades?
President Trump should read Sgt. Nott’s words to all of America at the Republican Convention, then at his inauguration, and then annually.
May God Bless You, Sgt. Nott.
“Another glorious day in the corps! A day in the Marine Corps is like a day on the farm. Every meal’s a banquet! Every paycheck a fortune! Every formation a parade! I LOVE the corps!”
Thats OK. A meritorious promotion of a single rank is “relatively” common. A meritorious promotion of two or more ranks is quite rare and would certainly be preceeded by a significant, newsworthy event.
The highest jump in promotion that I ever heard of or know of, is that of a person that went from being a nobody to the highest position in the world.
Ever hear of Obama?
I get your point. However, I had a friend who went to fly with the Flying Tigers in WWII as a 2Lt. He was a full-bird colonel two years later due to attrition. Went on to be a four-star general.
“maybe Sgt. Nott has aspirations for the officer side?”
Hope not. In general officers tell people they want it done and it’s the lower NCO’s that make the happen with their troops. Hate to lose experienced troops at that level. They mean more to the accomplishment of the system than the barred hats.

When I was in the Army I had a Sgt Major try to get me to go to officer school. He said we need more smart ones in the officer ranks who have been enlisted.

IIRC this is no longer official doctrine?
“He said we need more smart ones in the officer ranks who have been enlisted.”
During the time I was in the second time, I had a degree and came back in enlisted. A couple of officers were trying to entice me to go on the weighted hat and I chose not to because I felt I was accomplishing more in the trenches than in the command center.
Another problem, one I hope they have addressed since I retired active, is that there is a push back concerning the change from enlisted to officer and it was effecting promotion in the officers’ side of the house. Also, the separation in the two factions and how each was expected to maintain themselves was also a problem as when the enlisted joined the officer’ ranks they went either one way or the other hard expecting extreme military bearing or a little more laxed. Both created a problem for each side of the boat.

You can do a lot of things for meals on wheels.

Mustangs are the best officers.
